Chapter 7
Joann was getting used to all her Charm’s homework now.
Her head was filled with incantation, wand movements and proper use of charms. She
was enjoying her first year, now that life at Hogwarts was becoming, well her
life. Her mind swirled around the thoughts of school ending soon as she placed
her heavy book-bag down onto the desk in front of her. She was ready to be a
Second Year, no longer an “Icle Firsty” as she had been called for the last few
months.
“Hey Jo.” Karla said behind her. She placed her bag next
to Joann’s and sat down in her chair. Joann smiled.
“Are you ready for class?” Joann asked Karla. “A Hufflepuff
told me we get to perform the Sunlight Charm and some kind of dancing charm I
think.” Joann said shrugging her shoulders.
“I bet the dancing one will be fun.” Karla said as others
started to make their way into the class room.
Joann and Karla started talking about the new classes coming
up in Second Year when the Professor walked in and tapped his wand on the blackboard.
The word “Concentration” spelled out across the top.
“Good afternoon class. Concentration is something that
you don't often see in spellwork. While you will usually have to focus upon a
target or exert some effort of will to empower a spell, it's not often that you
must concentrate on anything when you are casting a spell. However, when
concentration is required, it often means that the spell is fairly complex.”
Joann grabbed her notebook and began taking notes:
Concentration-
- Concentration
involves focus over time.
- thought, feeling or desire in your mind
Modifications-
- Not all spells can be modified
-Can be- Lumos
Solem, Lumos Numerosa
Lumos Solem-
- LOO-mos SO-lem
- Single counter-clockwise loop ending with
the wand pointed toward the target
- Beam of intense light often compared with
sunlight
- Willpower put into the spell determines how
powerful the effect is
- requires focus to precisely direct the beam
- Faint white like
a flashlight to a brilliant light golden yellow at its maximum
- does not turn scarlet if over-charged
Lumos Numerosa-
- LOO-mos Noom-air-O-sa
- Single counter-clockwise loop, then several
rapid counter-clockwise loops.
- Produces several spheres of light that can
wander directed by the caster's will
- concentrate upon each orb that is conjured
- clustered together is the easiest way to
move them all at the same time
Joann set her quill down and took a deep breath. This
lesson seemed pretty complicated.
“Alright students, it’s time to practice. I will give you
15 minutes to practice and then I am going to put out of the candles and make
it dark in here so you can practice in condition which actually need these sort
of charms.” He said walking into the classroom to a student with his hand up.
“The Sunlight Charm will be perfect for midnight kitchen
raids, well If I was brave enough to do it.” Karla said with a giggle.
Joann stuck her wand out and pointed it at her desk,
performed a simple single counter-clockwise loop ending with the wand pointed
toward the desk and said “Lumos Solem”. A gentle whitish light emitted from her
wand onto the desk. She concentrated hard on the desk and watched as her bean
of light seemed to change slightly when she concentrated even harder. Karla
beside her seemed to have figured the charm out as well as Joann could see a
slight light out of her peripheral vision.
“Alright guys, lights out.” The Professor said with a
wave of his wand. The classroom was instantly pitch black. A few girls in the
back screeched, while some boys were giggling to Joann’s right.
“Just so you all know, I can clearly see what you all are
doing, so no funny business in my classroom.” The Professor said at the front
of the class. Joann blinked a few times but could still see nothing.
“Joann! Where are you!” Karla said to Joann’s left.
“I’m here.” Joann said placing her hand on Karla’s
shoulder. “Are you read to try the Dancing Lights Charm?” Joann asked.
“Yes!” Karla said.
Joann raised her wand confidently, drew her wand across
the air in a single counter-clockwise loop, then several rapid counter-clockwise
loops and said “Lumos Numerosa” loudly into the dark classroom. The dark
classroom was instantly filled with light as Karla and Joann’s charms took
form. Two round orbs floated lazily in front of Karla as three floated in front
of Joann.
“Wow!” someone said behind Joann. Joann concentrated
harder and was able to will another orb into existence, but shortly lost it due
to more orbs floating around the classroom, one bumping into her head.
“Great job students.” The professor said. He clapped his
hands and the light reappeared in the room. A few lingering orbs began to
vanish as people started to put away their books.
“Please practice these charms in the following days. Don’t
forget to update your Journals as well.” He said as students began to filter
from the well lit room.
“That was awesome. I think I have a new favorite charm.”
Joann said skipping happily from the room.
