Chapter 4
Joann showed up to class 30 minutes earlier than that of her
school mates. Her book back slung heavy on her shoulder with a multitude of
books.
Karla had to finish
up an unfortunate detention with the head Librarian due to her unsuccessful
attempt to smuggle extra books out of the library, so Joann was on her own for
the next half hour.
Joann giggle under her breath. The book she was currently
reading was also smuggled out in an attempt to exceed her loan limit. She just
didn’t get caught.
She threw her book bag onto the ground with a loud “Thump”
and sat haphazardly into her normal chair in the front row. This week had exhausted
her. Charms, Transfiguration, Potions, Herbology, Astronomy, DADA and History
of Magic homework piled on her and she was only a few more assignments away
from imploding!
“Hey Jo!” said someone from the back of the classroom.
“Oh hey Dominick” she said pulling her eyes away from the
book in her hands.
The tall blond boy sat down in the row behind her. His
fingers idly tapping out the notes to a song on the desk in front of him.
“So what did you think about the History of Magic lesson today?
I fell asleep about two minute’s in.” he laughed.
“It was alright, I didn’t fall asleep but unfortunately I
did lose a bit of interested after the second hour.” She said shifting back to
the front of the room as she started to see other students take their seats.
“Oh my God’s!!” said Karla landing hard in her chair, be
book bag thrown to the floor as hard as she could muster.
“She made me dust History of Magic books, then count pages
in old as dirt boring books to make sure the pages are in correct order!!
Apparently someone accidently set off a disorganization spell in the library
and the books lost count of their pages! It was horrible” She ending throwing
her head down on the table with a loud thud.
The professor made his way to the front of the classroom. “If
one thing could be credited for the rise of coordinated human thought, it is
the development of language…” The lesson began and Joann turned all of her
attention to the professor in the front of the class.
After a few hours…
“Today we will be looking at two spells that both have
strong Latin roots. The first one, the Fire-Making Charm, has an incantation
that comes directly from a Latin word. The incantation for the Fire-Making
Charm is Incendio.” The teacher said. Joann was excited about this spell. This
spell was one of the first spells that really seemed to be on the more
dangerous side.
“The second spell we'll be looking at is the Locomotion
Charm. This charm, which can be slightly confusing, is not actually a
"flight" charm. While the object it affects appears to
"fly", in reality it is simply hovering a few inches above the
ground.” The professor said to the class.
Another spell that will be very useful to her while here at
Hogwarts, she thought.
Once the professor was done talking he walked around the
room handing out bright pink tissues to each student. “I would first like you
all master the Locomotion spell on this tissue, then try Incendio next. I would
prefer that no one in the class practice Incendio outside of this room. I can
check you off once you have seemed to master it, but I don’t want any Dorms
catching on fire.” He said looking directly at a group of Slytherin boys in the
back of the room.
Joann attempted Locomotion and instantly was able to get the
tissue to move in the directions she wanted. She looked beside her and noticed
that Karla had also had great luck with the charm and was looking at her tissue
apprehensively.
“What wrong?” she asked Karla
“Fire spells always kinda freak me out” she said looking
down at the tissue.
“I’m sure you will be just fine. Look!” she pointed at the
professor who was carrying around a large red tank with a handle and a pin in
the top.
“It’s one of those Muggle Fire Puter-out-ers, nothing will
go wrong.” She smiled at Karla and placed her hand on her wrist. Karla nodded
and smiled back.
They sat up straight and looked at each other. “One, two,
three.” They said quietly together.
“Incendio!” They said simultaneously. They tissues both
igniting into a small smoldering fire in front of them. “Yes!” Squeaked Karla.
“We did it!” Joann said high-fiving Karla.
