Let There Be Light!
Chapter 1
The early morning light was pouring into the large open
windows of the classroom as Joann walked into the large room. Her eyes darting
back and forth taking inl the new and exciting possibilities which lay in this
stone room. Rows of desks lined the large space, the chairs of them facing an
ancient looking board in the front.
She was the first to arrive and filled with joy when she saw
every seat empty and open for her picking. She puffed out her chest and walked
to the front of the room picking the first deck directly in front of the
teachers. Her inner Ravenclaw bursting forth and preening with pride.
Behind her she could her the low murmur of her fellow first
years as they made their way into their first Charms lesson of the school year.
There was a nervous buzz in the air. What were they to expect? Were they already
behind in their school work? How much homework was the Proffesor going to
assign? The questions sat in the air after being whispered.
The class filled with the murmurs of students finding their
seats. Conversation rose from a gentle whisper to a loud roar. All of her first
years in Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff found their seats and started making friends
with their class mates.
A door to the right opened and a tall wizard walked out clutching
his wand in his hand. Upon the board the names "Professor Quilmane"
wrote out in white regal looking script. Joann looked forward at her new
teacher.
"Welcome to Charms first years! As you can appreciate I
am Professor Quilmane and I am here to help you on your spell casting
journey."
He walked to the front of the class and crossed his arms,
"I expect the best behavior in this class as we are going to be performing
dangerous spells."
The class whispered excitedly, as they grabbed for their
wands.
"...but not for quite some time. First we will be
learning the basics of course, which includes history, and wand lore. So please
turn to chapter one in Quintessential Magic: An Introduction to Charms:"
For the next two hours the teacher lectured with regards to
wands, wand lore, laws and history. Joann diligently took down notes on her
parchment.
"Alright everyone pull out your wands it's time for some
practice." The teacher said
The classroom grew loud as student searched for their wands
and removed the papers and books off the tables.
"We are going to practice the wand lighting spell Lumos
pronounced ‘LOO-mos’, the wand movement is a single simple loop. Alright
everyone give it a go. I will roam around and see how it turns out. Most of you
may get but a flicker, but as you practice it should become a nice bright glow.
Joann pulled out her wand, faced the front of the room took
a deep breath and said "Lumos" as she drew a simple circle in the
air. The tip of the wand flickered slightly and then stopped. She tried again
and on the fourth attempt was able to emit a golden glow.
"Well done Joann." said the Professor as her
walked by her table.
"Alright everyone. Please remember to do your homework
worksheet I provided you with as well as your Journal entry for the day. I
expect you to have mastered a soft glow by next week. Class dismissed!"
