Chapter 1
It had only been a year since Gaea had been defeated, and demigods were popping up like flies. Sometimes people would just show up at Camp Halfblood, being chased by some sort of monster, and other times they were stumbled upon by accident.
My name's Zacharie, and I'm a son of Apollo.
Summer was a week away. Camp Halfblood was only a week away. The be honest, I was actually disappointed. It had been my first year at the most prestigious music school in New York and I still hadn't gotten expelled. I hadn't even seen one monster. For once, I felt like a normal kid. So of course, everything ended in flames.
It was the last week of school when I saw her for the first time. Eriana. (love at first sight)She had been in my vocals class all year, but I guess I just never noticed her. She never talked. She never even sang. I only saw her on the last week of school because we both happened to be the first two there.
"Hi." I greeted, setting down my guitar.
She waved shyly but didn't say a word, brushing a lock of driftwood colored hair aside from her face.
I drummed sat down, and after a minute of awkward silence, began to drum my fingertips on my knee. "So, do you have any summer plans?" I asked, looking up.
Only then did I see her earbuds, "Oh." I blushed.
Then the classroom door opened, and I looked to it for salvation.... only to see a hydra staring back at me. It grinned wickedly. "Oh, crap," I muttered, knocking my chair down as I stood up.
The girl looked up, and her light eyes widened, "What is that?" She squeaked.
"You can see it?" He asked, staring at her.
"How nice. Two birdssss with one sssstone." The hydra hissed, lunging at me.
I quickly reached for the bow that was usually on my back, but now wasn't. I muttered a curse before grabbing my guitar, bringing it down on the Hydra's head. I rolled my eyes as the guitar I had spent a year's worth of lifeguarding money on cracked.
"Run!" I ordered the girl. She gulped and bolted towards the door... only for another hydra to appear.
"help!" She yelled.
I jumped forward, thinking at the speed of light (no pun intended) as I kicked my feet into the hydra, grabbing the girl, by her arm, and running.
"What were those things." She asked in between panting, while we ran down the hall. People were staring at us like we were psychos, but I didn't slow.
"Hydras." I told her, not even winded, "We need to find fire."
"Fire?" She repeated
"Yeah, to kill them." I said, dodging around a corner and into the stairwell, "And we need to get to camp." I cursed again, "Only one more week!" We raced down the stairs, and into the hallway where my locker was. I stopped at my locker, slamming it open, and shuffling through the sheets of music until my hand grasped the bow. "Here it is." I drew it out. A gift from my dad, carved from a laurel tree. Arrows would just appear in the nook, so I never ran out.
"Now all we need is fire," I said, turning back to the girl.
She dug her hand into her sweatshirt, and pulled out a lighter, "It isn't much." She muttered wiping sweat from her brow with her free hand.
"It'll do," I said snatching it from her, and holding the flame to an arrow. Then came the waiting. I bounced from foot to foot, getting more anxious by the second, and then BOOM! There they were, charging down the hall. That's when I started shooting. I shot flaming arrows at the two hydras until both of their heads were severed (which, let me tell you, was not easy)
When I was done, I surveyed the wreckage. The sprinklers had gone off, along with the fire alarm. The hall was in ruin, The lockers were covered in burn marks, while pools of monster blood were mixing with the water. I was definitely going to be expelled. Then, I looked back at the girl.
She was gone.
"Crap! She's a demigod!" I muttered, bolting down the hall in the direction I assumed she had gone. Down the stairs, and out the door, where students were begining to line up. Sure enough, there she was. She wasn't even wet.
She looked at me with frightened eyes... and took off.
I chased after her, catching up quickly.
"Let me go!" She demanded, "What was that?" She panted, her eyes like a doe cornered in the woods, "What are hydras? Who are you? Why couldn't anyone else see them?" Everything she said came out in a jumble of words.
"It's hard to explain." I admitted, "But you're either a demigod, or you can see through the mist. Which means one of your parents was a greek god."
She gulped, "What id I don't want to be a half-god- or whatever you called it."
I shrugged, "That isn't really an option. But I know where you'll be safe. Come with me... please." I said, offering my outstretched hand as a peace offering.
She looked at my hand, and then at the school, then back at my hand, "Ok... I'm Eriana"
"Zacharie."
