Telling Teddy

Chapter 3

Harry was looking down at his watch nervously while the real state agent talked about the 4th house they were visiting that friday morning. The young man was worried he’d be late to pick Teddy up from his grandmother, since she made it clear she needed to tell something to him as well. Ginny looked as if hope had died in her. All the houses they had visited that week (about 20) were never what they wanted, not even a bit.

Although their schedules during the week were always a bit chaotic, the soon to be parents found some time that week to start looking at houses as they had discussed before. They decided to do it now before they got too busy with work or baby preparations and end up bringing the baby back to Grimmauld Place. Clearly they didn’t remember it would still take other 7 months until their child was born. That particular day, Harry took a day off and Ginny also received a day off before the big game there would be on the next day.

“So you didn’t like this one too?” The real state agent Billy asked

“Nop. No offense but it looks like the Shrieking Shack instead of a home.” Ginny said with no hesitation.

“Very well, then. Let’s go to the last one I have planned out for today, shall we?”

Harry and Ginny took the man’s arm and he apparated them to the next location. This time they reached a place out of a little wizard town just on the outskirts of London. As soon as Ginny absorbed completely the scenery before her, she lost her breath for a moment or two. Apparently Harry had the very same reaction and that gave Billy his queue to start talking about the property.

“Hm that’s the best reaction you had the whole week. As you can see, it’s a big property, with a very large garden. There’s the garage with its driveway and a broom-shack. Maybe in the future you may think of buying a muggle car, no? They are really useful when taking the kids to Hogwarts, I can tell you that.”

Harry looked over Ginny’s belly and thought of Teddy as he said. “That’s not a bad idea, indeed” Harry nodded, making a mental note to ask Hermione about it later. “How about the house per say?”

“Why don’t we go inside?” Billy suggested leading the way. “There is this big porch rounding the whole house, very nice to spend summer nights looking out to the back yard.” When they reached inside, Ginny grasped in happiness. Although there might be a little of painting work in order and other repairs, the house seemed as they had imagined. A large front and dining room, with enough space to have Weasley’s reunions eventually, a good drawing room with a fire place and a perfect kitchen. It had lots of cabinet and counter space, there was room for a 6 seating table (Perfect: me, Harry, Teddy and our three children, Ginny thought. Merlin, that’s getting ahead of myself!), a big window looking out in the back where there was enough space to a half Quidditch pitch and finally a Floo connected fire.

“There is also a basement for house-elf accommodation” Billy added “It is on that wall,” he pointed “but it was been bewitched so that only house-elves can see it.”

When they reached the first floor, there were two doors to each side of the hallway. Harry acknowledge the number of rooms and he already knew there would be one child for each one. He already could imagine Teddy’s bedroom in front of him. Each room had its own bathroom and closet space. Finally at the end of that hall, there was fifth door where they could find a room that was obviously prepared for a study and little personal library.

“What about the master bedroom?” Ginny asked curiously.

They climbed another floor and finally reached the master bedroom which was the only room at the last floor. There was a balcony also facing the backyard where the afternoon sun would reach, a large closet and a luxurious bathroom. Facing the front of the house there was a big window with a bench where the first thought that came to Ginny was spending quiet evenings reading and watching for Harry to come home.

Billy left the couple to themselves for a while so they could discuss in privacy their thoughts on the house he had just shown. Ginny made sure the agent was out of earshot before she turned to Harry.

“It’s perfect, Harry! Look,” she said pointing to the backyard “We could put up Quidditch goal posts, and we could share a study, that way we can work together and look at this balcony!”

Harry hugged his wife and asked “Are you sure?”

“Well, aren’t you?” Ginny cross-fired.

“I agree with everything you just said and more. I just want you to be as certain as I am!”

Ginny softly kissed her husband and said with a serious tone. “Yes, I am!”

The couple went downstairs to find Billy and close the deal. The house was just a little over what Harry and Ginny had planned to spend, but they didn’t even mind. It would be the house they would spend the rest of their days together. It had to be perfect. They headed back to the real state office to sign all there was to be signed and within an hour, the couple had the keys to their new home.

“We are late to pick up Teddy!” Harry said, when they reached the street to apparate to Andromeda’s place.

“I’m sure she will understand, honey.” Ginny calmed him down. He had been like that ever since he got Andromeda’s reply to his letter, saying she needed tell him something as well. The plan was to have Ginny take Teddy home and Harry would stay behind to tell his godson’s grandmother that Ginny was pregnant and to listen whatever there was to be told.

Harry and Ginny got to Godric's Hallow where Andromeda lived with her grandson in a split second. They walked hand in hand to her house and rang the bell. Soon enough, there he was, Teddy with a black hair like his godfather, answering the door. Harry entered and embraced his godson with a tight hug.

“Hey, buddy! Are you ready to spend the weekend with us?”

“Yes!!” Teddy cheered “Is Victoire going to be there?” the two little ones had become quite the friends since they practically had been growing up together.

“We could talk to uncle Bill and aunt Fleur to let her come tomorrow or Sunday, what do you think?” Ginny asked picking up her godson to a hug as well. When the little guy seemed pleased, she put him down and greeted Andromeda as well. She took in the old woman in front of her and noticed as she had become a bit grey and didn’t look good at all. “So, I’ll be going home with Teddy ok? Harry can tell you our news and when he gets back we’ll tell Teddy together. Take care, Mrs. Tonks.” Ginny picked up the child again and grabbed his weekend bag and left to go home. Harry watched her as she closed the door and then turned to the old lady.

“Tea, sweetie?” Andromeda offered.

“Yes, please.” Harry accepted while he sat on the couch. The witch took out her wand and summed the tea set from the kitchen and served on the rest table in front of the couch and let herself sit on a chair across from Harry. “Hm, thanks” Harry said sipping the tea. “So, Ginny and I have quite a big news.”

“Yes, I’ve been wondering what it was.”

“Ginny is pregnant!” Harry exclaimed, feeling quite proud.

“Oh, that’s wonderful! Congratulations!”

“Don’t worry about Teddy, though. I’ll be as much there for him as I am now. He’s as a son for me too.” Harry assured.

“I really wouldn’t think any differently, Harry! As the years passes us by, I am more sure that Dora and Remus made the right choice to name you Teddy’s godfather. And it’s the fact that I know you love Teddy as a son that gives me peace of mind to take on whatever is reserved for me.”

“Reserved for you?”

“Harry, my dear boy, I’m very sick and old. The Healer said I don’t have that much time left and I’m actually quite okay with that!” Andromeda explained. Harry looked as if life had left his green eyes. He just didn’t understand why. The war was over, there was no need for anymore death. But he couldn’t go against Nature, it was how things worked. Before he could form his  own words, the Andromeda continued “No, there isn’t much to be done. And that’s ok, Harry, because the only thing I would be worry about is Teddy and I know you will take care of him, won’t you?”

“Yes, of course! I’m so sorry, Mrs. Tonks. I really am.”

“Don’t be, it’s just the way things are.”

Fleur was almost done clearing out the lunch table when she heard something on the Floo. She went to check only to see Ginny’s head on it. “‘ey, Ginny. Is ‘verything ok, oui?”

“Hey, Fleur. Yes, everything is great. I was just wondering if there was a way Vic could spend a day with us. Teddy is here and he misses his little friend.”

Although her daughter was almost 6, the young mother still had some difficulty on letting her child go. But when she thought better, it would be nice to have a little peace, just with baby Dominique to take care. And then, Fleur had a better ideia yet. Why not spend a day just by herself and her husband? She trusted Ginny and Harry enough and it would be good for them since they were soon to be parents. With that, she replied “Could you get Dom too?” Ginny considered this a moment before nodding. “Tomorrow then, we‘re going to watch your game, and then you take the girls, oui?”

“Sure, that’s great, Fleur, thanks! I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye.”

“Bye, ‘oney!” Fleur smile to herself when Ginny’s head disappeared in the green fire and started the planning for a good afternoon of romance with Bill the next day. Merlin knew how they were both needing it.

Harry popped just outside Grimmauld Place and took out his wand to unlocked the door of number twelve. The young wizard was greeted by Flory and the usual bow as he stepped inside, already being told she was very upset because she wanted to start on dinner but Master Teddy was flying on his toy broom in the kitchen. He laughed at this and went straight to the basement to find Ginny chasing Teddy around as he flew, quite well, on the toy he had got from Harry and Ginny years before for his second birthday.

“Harry!” the little boy screamed when he saw Harry coming in just before tumbling over and falling on the ground as he lost his focus on the broom. Both adults ran in his aid as he threatened to start crying.

“I guess it’s time to quit the broom for now, isn’t it, buddy?” Harry said as he picked up the boy from the ground while Ginny conjured a healing spell for the little one’s knee. “There you go, all better now! Why don’t we go upstairs to the drawing room and let Flory start on dinner?” Harry suggested. The boy nodded and, still with a red eye, he curled against Harry’s chest letting Harry take him all the way to the other room. Ginny couldn’t help to feel pleased when she saw the way Harry was with Teddy. Soon he would be like that with their own child and that would make her the happiest witch alive.

Once upstairs, they sat comfortably on the couch as Harry and Ginny both faced the little boy who sat in their middle, ready to tell him the big news. Teddy looked up and saw them both staring at him. For a moment he expected them to be mad at him for falling off his broom. Sometimes, he was scolded by them when he did something wrong, just like a mummy and a daddy would do, he thought.

“Am I in trouble?” Teddy asked before either Harry and Ginny spoke.

“Of course not, dear!” Ginny immediately said. “It’s just that Harry and I have some news we wanted to share with you.”

“Yes, buddy. We wanted to tell you that… well, Ginny is pregnant.” Harry finally told the child.

“Preg-nant?” he tried to repeat. “Like there is going to be another baby?” Both Ginny and Harry nodded with a big grin on their faces but soon the grin faded as Teddy began to cry. “I DON’T WANT ANOTHER BABY! YOU WILL LOVE HIM MORE THAN ME!” he screamed and stormed out to his bedroom upstairs. The next thing the couple heard was a door being closed very hardly for a 6-year-old.

The young couple stood with their faces frowned for a few minutes before Harry spoke first. “Well, that was unexpected.”

An hour later, Harry decided it was time to go upstairs to talk to his godson. He had discussed with Ginny about Andromeda condition and although Ginny had been devastated, she understood that there was nothing to be done. Harry climbed the stairs and knocked on Teddy’s bedroom door, before opening and letting himself in before any answer. He found the boy lying on his bed sobbing quietly. He sat on the edge of the bed and called Teddy and asked him to turn over.

“Hey, buddy! What was that all about?” Harry asked and when he saw Teddy wasn’t going to answer he continued. “Why would you think we would love the baby more than we love you, huh?”

“Hmm,” Teddy started, still sobbing. “because he would be your real son. You’d be his real daddy.”

“Hey, hey, don’t cry!” Harry begged, cleaning the boy’s eyes “I know it’s hard not to have a ‘real’ mummy and daddy, but me and Ginny, we love more than anything. We love you like a mummy and a daddy.” Harry let the information sink in before continuing “I grew up with no mum and dad too, you know?”

“You did? Aren’t Mr. and Mrs. Weasley your mum and dad?”

Harry smiled. “No, there aren’t my real parents, but they took care of me after I went to Hogwarts, but before… I didn’t have anyone who loved me as I love you, bud!” Harry noticed that his godson had started to stop crying. “So, no more ‘you will love the baby more’ ok? We will love you both. Okay?” Teddy nodded. “And you will have a little brother or sister, isn’t that cool?” Teddy seemed to shrug a bit before nodding again. “Come here, give me a hug and a kiss.”

“Dinner is ready, sweethearts.” Ginny announced at the door where she had been standing watching Harry deal with their godson.
