Lesson 3 Essay 1-Blake Poetry

Chapter 5

The pair of poems chosen is called "The chimney-sweeper". It starts off very dark and sad, written in first person perspective from an unknown narrator. He was sold into slavery by his father after his mother died and was "now" sweeping the chimney of his master. He talks of other slaves who are forced to do the same and how another one named Tom cried when his head was shaved, but then the narrator consoles hi,.

Then suddenly there is a twist in the poem and instead of darkness and bitterness there is brightness and joy as an angel comes along and sets them free. The angel talked to Tom and told him to be good.

And then suddenly there is yet another twist where it turns out to be a dream and the mood changes again, but not so dark this time as Tom wakes up happy rather than sad and bitter.

In the Songs of Experience it seems to pick off at an entirely different time and perspective, talking of people who have found a baby without his parents, possibly the unknown narrator from the Songs of Innocence. It continues to talk about how they think they have made the baby happy, but it turns out the baby is unhappy and kind of bitter.
