1. The opening stage dierctions are so detailed so as to give readers a sense of what it looks like. It can help the stage designer set te stage during the play in case Tom Stoppard is not there to help and it is also there in case a reader has read the play but not seen it. Not only that, the entire play is set in that one room, and the importance of getting the setting right is a very big one.
2. We can deduce that this room would be of big importance as not many plays give so much details of setting the stage. Readers can deduce that this room would be used for either a big event or for a big part of the play.
3. The effect is that it shows in a way her curious nature and how she is willing to go in depth while learning.
4. Thomasina means her statement as "I need you to to teach me this!", as in a way an order to teach her or she could not learn. However, Septimus takes it as a compliment, as "I can't learn from anyone else but you".
