A Secret Exploration
Chapter 5
Adelaide had to explore that castle - she just had to!
Charlie and Mr Lengman were walking away - Adelaide hesitated. She didn't want to separate from Charlie, but he was only going down there, and they were walking slowly, talking.
So, making sure that Charlie and Lengman's backs were turned, she sprinted towards the greenhouse, and reached it in seconds. She peered through the glass into the greenhouse and smiled with delight. She saw beautiful plants, but some seemed alive! There was a vine that was curling itself around one a pole, and Adelaide was astounded.
Adelaide wanted to see more. It was full moon now, and it gave her light. She tiptoed towards the greenhouse door, but it was locked. Stumbling along the grass, she edged towards the lake, and looked down at it. It looked silver because of the moon. Everything was beautiful and peaceful.
Suddenly she saw a shape in the water, and she leaped away from the water. Then she saw a tentacle rise from the water, and it looked like it was waving at her. Then it went back into the water. A friendly octopus.
Adelaide laughed with delight but clapped a hand over her mouth. Her laughter had sounded so much more louder because it had echoed around the place, like banging on the walls of the castle.
Slowly Adelaide picked herself up, and felt solemn suddenly. She would not be able to actually get into the castle, because of course, all the doors to get into the castle were locked.
But then she saw something, and Adelaide heart rose. She had seen a open window. Maybe she could climb up the wall, for there were bits of rock that were sticking out that she could stand on, and then climb into that window.
Adelaide was more than excited. And she was a good climber.
She started to climb the wall smoothly and easily, faster than any other girl could climb. She had almost reached the window, and she grabbed the ledge and climbed in. She was inside the castle.
Adelaide's heart was beating furiously with excitement. Where would she go first. There would be so many places to explore! She chose to go down those steps - she would explore the bottom first and then go and explore to the very top. But as she stepped onto the staircase, it began to move! She didn't scream but gave a gasp and swallowed nervously, trying to calm herself.
Well, she thought, this is just the magic of the school. This is probably what it does every day! So she waited, and then to her relief, the staircase stopped moving and it had joined itself to another staircase.
She quickly walked off the staircase onto the next one, and then onto the next one, on and on, and going down and down.
Finally she reached the Great Hall, and looked around. There was the Entrance Hall, and down that was the actual entrance. She had to go down to the dungeons yet, but she wanted to explore the Great Hall first. Harry had told her all about it - how all the students sat down on their tables - Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Slytherin and Ravenclaw - and the professors and Headmistress sat at the end of the Great Hall.
She was about to enter the Great Hall when a growl of anger was heard behind her and a grumpy voice shouted, "A student out of bed again? You'll have detention missy, you sure will!"
