Some Notes On The Hebrew

Chapter 10

A beginner to The Key of Solomon, and it's pentacles may find the predominance of Hebrew challenging. Even those fluent in modern Hebrew may struggle a bit, because these pentacles use Ancient Hebrew, which has ambiguous contextual vowels. Some of you may find it no big deal to copy, but if you find it too much of an uphill battle, consider writing a seal with your preferred language! I have done my best to make the contents of each seal's writings clear partly for this exact purpose.

Consider learning the Hebrew alphabet though; it's only 22 letters! It will become much easier for you to copy a seal quickly when you know your Hays from your Hhets. I include some links to good sources to learn basic Hebrew below.

But here are some quick and dirty basics. Hebrew is written and read right to left. This means that the inscriptions around many of Solomons pentacles run counter-clockwise. There are no vowels, except, kinda, Aleph and Yod, so transliterations of Hebrew words into English look like acronyms. Some examples:

יהוה is YHVH, read as Yahweh or Jehovah. It is a name for God known as the Tetragrammaton, and used in many seals of religious magic.

(There are many, many Jewish names for God. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_Judaism )
