Chapter 8
It was the next day. Evelyn had stayed up all night. Dawn broke, and she had managed to get James down from the tree. Now he was lying on the ground, his ankle bleeding and Evelyn crouching over him, trying her best to bandage his ankle with a tissue.
James opened his eyes, and Evelyn immediately said, "James! Are you OK?"
James didn't answer, but just looked up at her and then closed his eyes.
"James!" Evelyn said, looking at him anxiously. "Are you OK?"
James opened his eyes again and then managed to say, "I'm, sore, but all right." Then he managed to add, his eyes wide, "what if I turn into a whole werewolf at the full moon every month?" There was fear in his eyes.
"No, you won't, because the werewolf only nipped you, but your acts might be a little more... wolfish."
James groaned and closed his eyes once again.
"Will you be able to walk?" asked Evelyn.
"I think so," said James. Evelyn sighed with relief. She helped James up. "Here, have this," said Evelyn, handing him some bread that she had packed yesterday. James wolfed it down. "Let's go now," he said, with his mouth full.
"OK..." Together they started to walk, Evelyn's wand raised and ready to cast the Stunning Spell on whatever bounded up to them to attack.
They walked for fifteen minutes, and Evelyn said, "let's rest." She chucked James his wand, who held it ready to cast. Evelyn decided to start a fire, for it was quite chilly. There were lots of twigs and branches around, so it wasn't hard to collect firewood. "Oh, darn it!" she said angrily. "I didn't bring matches! How will we start a fire then?"
"Look around for flint?" suggested James.
"I don't think flint is commonly found in forests," said Evelyn, "but I'll try to find some. I'm going to go a little away, is that ok?"
"Yeah...." said James quietly. Then more confidently, "Yeah, it's fine Evelyn. You go and find that flint. We need a fire."
"OK," said Evelyn. She hesitated before walking off, glancing at James behind her shoulder.
As she walked along, searching frantically for flint, though she doubted that she would ever find it, she heard an odd squelching noise. She immediately stood straight, her wand ready.
The noise became louder, and then she could see a.... Blast Ended Skrewt. Evelyn screamed, but that was wrong to do, because if she hadn't, then the Blast Ended Skrewt wouldn't have seen her, but she did, and that was that. The Blast Ended Skrewt turned around, to face her, and it just looked like a giant scorpion. Its long sting was curled over its back.
Evelyn wildly cast the stunning spell, but that just rebounded upon the Skrewt's armour-like back. Then Evelyn remembered what Harry had cast in the Triwizard Tournament (she had read about it in the Daily Prophet, 'What Harry Did Years Ago'), he had cast the Impediment Jinx.
"Impedimenta!" shouted Evelyn. The spell again rebounded on the Skrewt's armor back. Evelyn knew she had to hit its underbelly, for there was no protective armor there. So she pointed her wand at that particular spot, and shouted the incantation again. When it hit the Skrewt, it staggered backwards, and Evelyn ran, ran all the way back to James.
"What's wrong?" James asked, surprised.
Evelyn breathlessly told him the whole story.
"Well, it's good you got away. These woods are certainly dangerous," said James, patting Evelyn on the shoulder. "A shame you didn't find any flint, but that's OK. I'm sure we'll get to the other side of the wood very soon," said James comfortingly.
Evelyn smiled at his hopeful words, and she, too, was sure they would finish this mission successfully.
