Why Did Petunia Dursley Hate Lily Potter? (Fan Theory)
Chapter 7
Why Did Petunia Dursley Hate Lily Potter?
Now, we all know that Petunia Dursley despised wizarding folk—especially her sister, Lily Potter. But what we don’t know is why. Why was Petunia so hateful towards wizarding kind?
Today, I’m going to share some of my personal theories as to why Petunia hated witches and wizards, as well as her sister Lily.
1. Petunia was angry.
One of my theories is that Petunia was angry at Lily for accepting the invitation to Hogwarts. I think there’s a good possibility Petunia simply wanted her sister to stay normal with her, and not be whisked away by her new wizarding friends. But Lily did not want to do that. Lily wanted to go to Hogwarts, learn, make new friends, and escape her normal life. This could’ve angered Petunia, making her hateful towards her sister, and the wizarding folk who snatched her away.
2. Petunia was jealous.
Another one of my theories is that Petunia was jealous of Lily. This one seems to be the widely accepted one, at least in my opinion, but we will never know for sure if it is true. This theory states that Petunia was jealous that Lily got an acceptance letter, and not her. After that, a lot of the attention was on Lily. Petunia probably wanted it for herself; she probably wanted to be special, too. Because of her jealousy, Petunia turned her back on her sister, and went off to live her own life.
3. Petunia was just that obsessed with normal.
We know the Dursleys hate all things magical, unrealistic, and anything that differed from their point of view. When she was younger, though we don’t know this to be true, perhaps she was bullied or made fun of, and this caused her to want to be normal. Then her sister received her letter, and was no longer “normal”. Petunia didn’t want to be made fun of for having a sister like that (if anyone found out), so she decided to bully her sister herself. She didn’t want her normal status to be downgraded by Lily’s non normal status.
These are just three of my personal theories about why Petunia hated Lily. There are many I didn’t cover today, but I think these three were enough to give you some ideas. Which one do you think is most plausible, or was it all three?
