The Winter Ball
Chapter 1
I leaned closer into the mirror to put on my earrings. The second one snapped closed and I took a step back to see how I looked.
I was wearing a purple dress, deep purple at the top, that gradually lightened into a lilac colour near my ankles. My brown hair was pulled in a messy bun, and though I tried my best with it, loose strands of hair had come out. It didn't matter anyway. Nothing mattered except the fact that I was going to the Winter Ball with a Ravenclaw named Asher. I was wearing square-shaped amethyst earrings. Mum gave them to me for my birthday.
I grinned.
I had never felt so pretty.
"Fawn! Come down, we have to meet Pearl!" That's Juniper, and - "Also you've been up there forever!" That's Ivy. My best Hufflepuff friends. Pearl's a Ravenclaw. No wonder. She's a genius.
"Coming!" I yell back. I run down the stairs, careful not to step on my dress. My friends were waiting for me near the Common Room's door. "How do I look?" I ask.
"Terrific. Let's go." Ivy turned to go. Yes I know, but she's not always impatient. Ivy's really sweet, if you get her at the right time. Juniper rolled her eyes.
"You look great." She said.
"Thanks."
So we made our way to where we were going to meet Pearl and our dates. But only Pearl was there, so we waiting a bit longer and talked.
Juniper has long black hair. And I mean long. Almost to her waist long. She's wearing a bright yellow dress, or more specifically, a fancy yellow shirt and a long identically yellow skirt. She's not really the type for dresses. It makes since that she's wearing Hufflepuff colours though. Juniper's the Seeker for the Hufflepuff Quiditch Team. She's brilliant too.
Ivy has really light brown hair that's almost blonde. She was wearing a light green dress that was mint coloured at the top. Her hair was neatly braided into a single braid.
Pearl was wearing a silver dress with blue star patterns here and there. Her short red hair was left as it is, just above her shoulders. She had saved up a lot of money and bought a fancy necklace with a gemstone that looked like a ruby.
I realized I hadn't been talking to them, though they've been chatting since we first saw Pearl. That's usually what happens, though I'm always paying attention. I try to listen over all the noise of the other students.
"...finally got a use for my black hair." Juniper was saying.
"You look really nice." Pearl replied.
"The boys are here!" Ivy said. I turned around. She was right. It was hard not to break into a huge grin when I saw Asher.
He was dressed in very dark blue dress robes. They matched his eyes. Milo, Owen, and Zaiden were behind him. Milo is in Gryffindor, Owen in Ravenclaw, and Zaiden in Slytherin. Ivy and Zaiden were going to the ball together. Juniper didn't really like him all that much, since he's the Seeker for Slytherin's Quiditch Team and he might have won them a match once or twice. They said goodbye to us and went into the ball room. Pearl and Milo went next. Asher took my hand. My heart sped up. I grinned at him and we walked in the room.
No doubt about it, the ball was the best time I've ever had at a dance.
When the ball started, it played classical music, and dancing with Asher was such fun. He did stumble a bit. Not great at the waltz, he is. Still, it was amazing. After half an hour, we went to get drinks, passing Chloe and Finn, and Gryffindor and a Slytherin that have been flirting with each other for ages but have never dated.
We got our drinks and headed toward a table, steering away from Amara and Arabella, two Slytherins. They were nice enough, but always gossiping. Every time I sit with them it's "did you hear" this and "blah blah blah told me" that.
We sat down with Juniper and Owen to drink our butterbeers. After a while though, they left to dance, and we were left alone.
Asher suddenly blushed. "Remember when we met?" He asked me.
I looked at him in surprise. "Of course. Pearl brought you to the Three Broomsticks with us."
He blushed deeper. "I asked her to introduce me to her because I knew you were friends." He grinned slyly.
I grinned back. "Deception at its finest." I joke. "I knew that story Pearl made up about you helping her with Herbology homework was a lie."
Eventually we got bored with the dance and Asher offered to show me a special place he found. "Let's go." I said.
Too busy following him, I bumped into a Gryffindor named Dustin. "Sorry!" I call. I skid to a stop and nearly bump into Asher, who had stopped at the foot of a spiral staircase.
"Up here." He grinned. Whatever he was going to show me must be great. It was a long staircase. But eventually, we got to the top. It was indeed beautiful.
The staircase opened into a balcony, that overlooked the Black Lake. The hills stretched on endlessly. The sky was filled with little twinkling stars, and a perfect crescent moon hung above.
I don't know how long we stayed there, with no one to bother us. Asher's arm wrapped around me, and his shoulder was comfortable against my cheek. His warm finger were interlaced with mine. We stared off into the distance, just him and me.
And eventually, when we kissed, it was the best moment of my life.
