The Nightmare Before Physics: Prompt by Alethea VanDemark
Chapter 2
"An orange was rolling down a hill when suddenly…" I stared off into the distance, trying to stay focused on Mr. D'Anza's Physics lecture. But honestly, anything could hold my attention more than random forces hitting oranges. Which was probably why I was failing the class.
Class ended, and Mr. D'Anza called me over.
"Ellie Dern?"
"Yes, Mr. D'Anza?"
"We need to talk." He motioned me over. "Let me get to the point- you've got an F in my class. If you don't bring your grade up, you're going to have to retake it." I shuddered,
"I know that, Mr. D'Anza." He held out my last test,
"You got three questions right on this test, Ellie! Out of fifty! You have to take this seriously, Miss Dern! You have to start paying attention."
"I'm trying!" I said. "I really am! But oranges rolling down hills are really hard to pay attention to!" He shook his head,
"I've never met a student who liked Physics, but I've also never met a student who was failing so miserably." I shrugged,
"What can I say. I'm special." He groaned.
"Ellie! If you don't pass the test tomorrow, you fail this class."
Mr. D'Anza handed out the test the next day. I took it and looked at the first problem.
An orange is rolling down a hill when suddenly…
I didn't read the rest. Why hadn't I paid more attention? I was going to fail the class! What was I going to do?
.....
I woke up with a start, breathing heavily. Today I had to start Physics. I was so nervous, I had apparently had a nightmare! But I was determined not to fail.
As long as there weren't any oranges…
P.S. Fs are for Fabulous.
