Chapter 8
Ferdinand and I entered Ollivanders. There was no one in there, but soon enough a man walked briskly into view. He smiled at them, and said, "Hello. How are you, children?"
Ferdinand smiled back and said, "good," politely, but I just stared at the man. He definitely wasn't Gerrick Ollivander. He wasn't thin and tall like Gerrick was, but kind of chubby, and he was wearing loose jeans with a t-shirt that paint had been spilt on.
Ferdinand nudged me in the side, and I immediately said, "Hello," to the man, but also said, "Um, sir? Where is Gerrick Ollivander, sir? I don't mean to be ru-"
"Oh no, that is absolutely fine to ask," said the man. "He is actually my cousin. But he went somewhere today, I'm not sure where..."
"Oh, that's fine," I said quickly. "Um, my friend here just came to get his wand." She pointed at Ferdinand, who smiled at the man.
"OK - and I should have introduced myself. I am Bruno Weirdo."
I prevented myself from laughing at his sir name by biting my fist.
"Well, young man, you may try a few wands now," said Bruno. He handed Ferdinand a thin box, that was coated with dust, and Ferdinand took it out of the box and waved it.
Immediately the glass of the window broke, and Ferdinand started to apologise, but Bruno had already fixed it with a flick of his own wand.
Ferdinand smiled at the amazing magic, and Bruno handed him another wand, which was dark brown, almost black, and Ferdinand took it again from him, waved the wand, but nothing happened. Bruno took it away from him at once.
Once more he gave one of the thin boxes to Ferdinand, saying, "Phoenix tail hair core, 12 inches, oak wood." Ferdinand took it from him slowly. He flicked it, and at once a shower of red and gold sparks shot out from his wand and Ferdinand smiled and said, "Does this mean that this wand has chosen me?" he asked excitedly.
Bruno Weirdo clapped and I beamed. Bruno leaned forward to Ferdinand and said, "It does indeed mean that it has chosen you, and this is your wand!"
Ferdinand was so excited, and he asked if Bruno could teach him one simple spell he learnt so he could try it with his wand, but Bruno shook his head, a little sadly, and said, "No, Ferdinand, you're not allowed to do magic outside of Hogwarts."
"That's OK, and I can't wait to go to Hogwarts!" said Ferdinand. "Thank you so much, Bruno!"
"You're pleasure," said Bruno, smiling.
We thanked him three more times, until Bruno told us that he needed to go, and he disappeared into the back of the shop.
We walked out of 'Ollivanders' out onto the cobbled street.
Ferdinand turned to face me, smiling, saying, "Thanks for all your help, Sylvia."
"No problem," I said, smiling back.
