Night Fight

Chapter 11
"Point me." Murmured the wizard, and his wand spun on his palm to point left. The wizard nodded approvingly and set off right. The trees leaned over him, dark and menacing, and the wizard couldn't help but shudder slightly as a cold crooked branch brushed his shoulder. It's all worth it, he told himself firmly. Think of the life you're going to lead when you get your wish. He smiled an avaricious smile.
However, his smile vanished as he stumbled over a root.
"Stupid forest." He muttered. And it wasn't just the forest that seemed to be after him. The Hogwarts staff... that Headmistress... all wanted him out and gone. But he wouldn't go. He would find the particle. No one was going to stop him.
His thoughts were interrupted suddenly by a strange noise. A rumbling, creaking, coughing noise.
And a car burst into the clearing.
The wizard jumped nearly a foot in the air, his wand raised. What was the meaning of this? A car, in the forest? And could that be - two girls jumping out the front seats of the car? It must be a trick - an enemy -
Without thinking it over properly the wizard yelled "Expelliarmus!"

I watched in horror as Aster's wand shot out of her hand and she was blasted backwards. I reached towards her but at the same time raised my wand towards the wizard, torn for what to do. Aster was stirring, she was stumbling to her feet, about to lunge at the man, who now clasped her wand.
"WAIT!" I yelled as loudly as I could. My voice reverberated through the forest, and after it had faded an eerie silence fell. Aster stood, panting, and the wizard's stunned expression was frozen on his face. It's funny how even though I'm such a quiet person when I shout everyone listens to me.
"Stop. We need to stop this. Fighting isn't getting us anywhere."
"Who are you?" The wizard snapped. "What are you doing here?"
The car growled menacingly (Yes, the car).
The wizard's eyes flashed to the car. "And what is that?"
"What does it look like?" Aster said rather scathingly. "And who are you?"
"I'm a respectable wizard here on respectable business." The wizard said immediately, as if it was something he was used to saying.
Aster and I glanced at each other, and we were both, it was clear, thinking the same thing. One, that he was a total idiot by thinking we'd believe that you could have any respectable business going on when you're in the forbidden forest, and two... that he was a magiarchaeologist, of course.
"Respectable business?" I repeated. "Like... you're from the ministry?"
The wizard fumbled for an answer. "No - I mean, yes - well - not exactly - I mean - who are you to question me anyway? Are you students from up at that school?"
I nodded.
"Well, you shouldn't be down here, should you?" The wizard said, a smile curling his lips. "I might just have to escort you back to the castle."
Aster suddenly burst out, as if it was too hard to hold in, "I don't think Headmistress Mcgonagall would like to see magiarchaeologists like you in the castle."
The wizard opened his mouth in surprise, but then his expression turned to anger. "How dare you - how do you know -"
"We know what you're looking for." The words, somewhat surprisingly, came from me.
"And we intend to get it first." That came from Aster, of course.
The wizard looked from one of us to the other, his face a mess of several complicated emotions, primarily fury.
"Do you really think a pair of petty school children deserve something as precious as the wishing particle? It disgusts me to think of how you'd waste it."
"Waste it?" Aster's voice was as cold and sardonic as ice. "Waste it? With the things that you're going to do with it?"
"You don't know anything about what I would do with it -"
"I do know. I can tell. You want it all for yourself. Why wouldn't you have other people with you? Why didn't you tell Mcgonagall you were sneaking here? If you were good you wouldn't be looking for it at all."
"So what does that make you?" The wizard sneered.
"That," I interrupted, "Makes Aster more than good - it makes her wonderful. She's doing this all for me."
Aster looked at me, and I could make out in the recently arrived moonlight tears sparkling in her eyes. It was then I realised the full extent of our friendship. Our friendship.
It was also then that I actually realised - the moon was shining.
The full moon.
And then it was happening.
I sunk onto the ground, moaning.
No, I thought desperately. You have to control this. You're putting everyone in danger. You haven't had your potion -
But it was too late - my mind was slipping away. I tried to grasp hold of it - tried to hold on to my human form - but it was nearly all gone -
A dozen, shining silver wolves leapt out of the trees, their beautiful coats shining in the moonlight. In that moment it was almost as if I saw them as humans - long silver hair shining, eyes of green, yellow, and blue looking fiercely at the wizard - their long fur cloaks and boots covering their slim forms. They were a family - the sons and daughters of the moon.
And then the vision was gone, and I was gone, too.
