The Edge of the District

Chapter 2
I’m not ready to go to the edge of the District the next day. It seems eerie and unexpecting. What if there is a train? Then what will I do? Say I don’t want to go anymore? I don’t think that’s an option.

I say bye to mom and my brother before grabbing my bow and pocket knife. Then I grab my little amount of belongings before I’m going to the edge of the District. I make sure to pass goodbyes around as I go, too.

I tug at the sleeves of my worn out and teared dress with the apron as I wait for the person to be here. I don’t know what they’re supposed to look like, so I’m nervous about who I’m waiting on. What if it’s someone from the Capitol?

I stand there for a long while, my hand quivering around my bow. I don’t know why, but I have the immediate urge to hold my weapon and be ready to shoot. If it is a member from the Capitol, this won’t work, and I know it. I just want to feel safe. Because right now the odds are not in my favor. Not that they ever have been.

Finally, this larger man (that almost looks like a giant) approaches me at the edge of the District.

“Blimey! Yer must be Annalise Miracle! Are yer?” The man asks.

“And you must be a pirate or giant!” I yell, looking up at him. I lift my bow up and go to load it when he stops me.
“Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you. Professor McGonagall wouldn’t be too happy about that.” The man says, with a small smile.

“Then who are you? If you aren’t a part of the Capitol or any District, then who are you? And what do you want?” I say, lowering my bow down.

“I’m Rebus Hagrid. Keeper of keys at Hogwarts. And I’m here to take you to Hogwarts, that is why you’re waiting here as I understand it.” He says, gently.

“Well...alright, but if I get hurt by you I will stand up and use the bow.” I say.

He laughs and hands me a package. “That’s all of your stuff for your year at Hogwarts. You might also have trouble since you’re starting in your third year. Don’t worry though, McGonagall assigned you a buddy so to speak. His name is James Sirius Potter. Good man he is.” He explains.

“So he’s the other tribute then? I thought this wasn’t the Hunger Games!” I yelped. The package, a male companion, and a large man. This is definitely the Hunger Games!

“It isn’t. Here, come with me. I’ll show you.” Hagrid says, holding out his hand.

His hand is so big that it could crush mine, so I’m reluctant to take it. But when I do I’m shocked by his gentleness. Next thing I know I’m swirling through air and then just outside of a...train station!? This was not what I had signed up for!
