The Giver (A Fanfiction)

written by (: GONE !!

Hi!! My name is Lila Black. I live in a community of sameness. So that means no color, no emotions, no real family, no choices, and no LOVE. Where I live is called a dwelling and I can't touch anyone outside my imminent family. We have no memories but our own. The memories are kept by the Receiver of Memory the most important person in the community. The Elders keep us in line and make the choices for us. We have morning injections to keep the "stirrings" away. The "stirrings" are dreams of people and that those dreams have rules are broken. I took morning injections until I found out what they were. Now time to start. Let's go back to my dwelling.

Chapter 19
~Conner's pov.~

I glare at the Reciever but quickly stop because everyone comes in. Some glance at us but look away because that is rude. Lila taps her foot quickly and looks like she is ready to bolt. I hover my hand over hers when no one is looking. Then it starts. I don't listen until I hear that one name.

"Thea Lockwood is assigned Nurturer. You will take care of the infants and make sure they progress." Chief Elder hands Thea her new outfit and waits for her to sit back down.

"You two get ready to walk down," The Reciever whispers to us. Lila nods and I just look at the Chief Elder.

"Now we have some special people who have the most important job. Receiver of Memory. Lila Black and Conner Adams please make your way to the stage." Lila gets up first and I follow her down. I feel everyone looking at us and it's horrible. "They have bravery, smarts, and what we don't know is the 'Seeing Beyond. Do you two have the 'Seeing Beyond'??"

"I do," Lila whispers.

"I do too." I say and she nods and Lila is shaking so much she looks like she will never stop.

"Good. Now you do not talk to anyone about your job. You will be excluded from the community in a room where you will stay. All the rules will be in the book. You two will compete for the spot of Reciever and whoever doesn't win will be released. Now let's have a round of applause for our two new Receivers of Memory!!" The whole audience cheers and Lila is still shaking. It should've stopped by now something else is up. The Cheif Elder hands us our rule files and they are quite slim compared to everyone else's. We walk off the stage to our families. Lila and I exchange one last look before leaving.

Once I'm home mom and dad head off to bed. I go to my desk and turn on the light. I open the file and see it's only 1 page.

RULES:

1. Go immediately at the end of school hours each day to the Annex entrance behind the House of the Old and present yourself to the attendant.

2. Go immediately to your dwelling at the conclusion of Training Hours each day.

3. From this moment you are exempted from rules governing rudeness. You may ask any question of any citizen and you will receive answers.

4. Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and Elders.

5. From this moment you are prohibited from dream-telling.

6. Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not apply for any medication.

7. You are prohibited to apply for release.

8. You may lie

I stare at the last line. We can't ever lie and now we can!?!? I close it and sneak out. I ride my bike to Lila's house. I tap on her window and she opens it. I climb into her room and stand in front of her. She looks at the floor instead of at me. I put my hand under her chin till she looks up.

"What's wrong??"

She blinks a couple of times and then it hits me. She was crying. "I keep thinking of what the Cheif Elder said and then I read the rules. It's too real now. I can't lose you," She wails quietly.

I hug her and rub her back. "It's ok. We will figure something out."

She nods. "I'm also afraid of something else..."

I keep hugging her and rubbing her back. "What is it??"

She looks up at me and her expression seems nervous. "I want you..."

"You already have me..." I'm confused now.

"No. I want all of you..."

It clicks now. "Oh. Oh!! You w-want..."

She nods. "Yes. But not now like someday in the future..."

I let go of her and walk to her window. "Idk..."

She looks hurt. "I know it was stupid..."

"Yeah." I open the window and hop on the tree. I climb the way down to my bike and race to my house. It's after hours and if I get caught it's bye-bye to me. I keep thinking of what Lila said. Did she actually mean that??
