The Giver (A Fanfiction)

written by (: GONE !!

Hi!! My name is Lila Black. I live in a community of sameness. So that means no color, no emotions, no real family, no choices, and no LOVE. Where I live is called a dwelling and I can't touch anyone outside my imminent family. We have no memories but our own. The memories are kept by the Receiver of Memory the most important person in the community. The Elders keep us in line and make the choices for us. We have morning injections to keep the "stirrings" away. The "stirrings" are dreams of people and that those dreams have rules are broken. I took morning injections until I found out what they were. Now time to start. Let's go back to my dwelling.

Chapter 18
~Lila's pov.~

I wake up early and get on my gray flowy dress. I put my hair up in a bun and walk downstairs. I go to the kitchen and start cooking breakfast. I cook waffles, bacon, and put some fresh fruit on the table. I think of Conner and get out of my daze when I hear a knock on my front door. Mom, dad, and Ky all looked surprised.

"I'll get. Be right back. Mom flip the waffles please." Mom nods and I head over to the door. I open and see some guards that wear the logo of the chief elder. "May I help you??"

The guard in front speaks. "We are here to escort Lila Black to the Chief Elder right now."

I put on a fake smile. "I'm right here and hold on I need to tell my family." I go back inside and hug them goodbye. "Cheif Elder wants me. I'll see you soon." They all looked surprised but don't ask any questions. I go back outside and get on my bike.

"Follow us." They lead me across town and to the ceremonial center. I put my bike in the bike rack and follow them. They lead up to the Cheif Elders balcony. I go into the small room and see Conner standing there in his gray suit. My heart beats faster and my stomach is full of butterflies. He smiles when he sees me and I smile back. The guards leave and I move closer to Conner.

"Why are you here??" I ask when I stand in front of him.

"For the same reason, you are. But I don't know why I'm here..." He shrugs and stiffens when someone walks in.

"Good. They got you here sooner the expected!!" The Cheif Elder celebrates. "I wanted to tell you that you will sit with the Reciever of Memory and come down when we call your names at the end. I also need to tell you that you two will compete for the spot of the Reciever of Memory. We will keep track of your pace and at the end of the year you are given the one who loses will be released."

Conner and I keep our act up. "Of course. I understand." We say at the same time.

"Good, now people will show up soon and the Recierve is waiting for you in the stands. Please go join him." She leaves and Conner and I head down to the Reciever. We both see an old guy about in his 80's it looks like. But he moves easily. Strange. Conner leads and shakes his hand.

"Hello, sir. I'm Conner and this is Lila. We are the Receivers in training."

I shake his hand too. "I already know boy. Now zip it and sit down. I don't have time for this." He barks at us and we quickly sit down. Wow, he is very cranky. I wonder why??

"Sir, I have a question," I say as he sits down next to me.

"What is it??" He asks dryly.

"I--uh--Why are you mad at us??" Shoot I can't ask that!!

"Miss, you know that you aren't allowed to ask that question."

I gulp. "Sorry..."

He starts chuckling. "I know what you and Conner are doing." He leans to us and whispers. "Not taking injections."

Conner looks surprised as I am. "H-how do you know??" Conner asks.

"I have my ways boy but you must be more careful." He sits back just when people come in. They don't look at us but I see Thea come in and she looks around for me in the 2 rows we are supposed to sit in. She sees me and quickly looks away and sits down. "Ahh, your friend Thea seems very hurt that you didn't tell her." The Reciever says and chuckles again.

I try not to cry and I grab the hem of my shirt. Conner's hand slowly goes over mine. To reassure me. "I wish I had but I couldn't."

"This is a tough life." He says and watches.
