The Giver (A Fanfiction)

written by (: GONE !!

Hi!! My name is Lila Black. I live in a community of sameness. So that means no color, no emotions, no real family, no choices, and no LOVE. Where I live is called a dwelling and I can't touch anyone outside my imminent family. We have no memories but our own. The memories are kept by the Receiver of Memory the most important person in the community. The Elders keep us in line and make the choices for us. We have morning injections to keep the "stirrings" away. The "stirrings" are dreams of people and that those dreams have rules are broken. I took morning injections until I found out what they were. Now time to start. Let's go back to my dwelling.

Chapter 14
~Conner's pov.~

I wake up to Lila's shaking. I turn on the lamp and see her sweating and shaking. I throw off the blanket and run upstairs to my parents.

"Mom. Dad. It's Lila." They were already awake and they rushed downstairs with me. We see Lila and she's on the floor. I rush over and move her sweaty hair off her forehead. She doesn't respond correctly.

"Oh, dear. Conner go get my bag." My mom says and goes to get a cold cloth from the kitchen. I run upstairs but trip on the stairs. My knees bang hard but I keep going. I see red on my pj's but I'm too worried about Lila. I grab my mom's bag and rush down the stairs. I come into the living room and find my parents taking off her clothes and putting cold rags all over her. I hand my mom her bag not looking at Lila for her own privacy.

"Conner, get some more rags." My dad orders me and then Lila starts freaking out in her sleep.

Then she screams. "IT BURNS!!" Then she is out again. Still struggling but not fully awake.

"Mom what happened??" I ask her, frozen in fear for Lila.

"Fever. She has a 102 temperature right now. Conner, listen to me. You need to stay calm but you need to go outside and ride your bike to the hospital. Say you need Mr. Holcomb. That's her usual doctor. Say you need fever medication for Lila. Conner now." My mother rushes me out the door. I run to my bike and take it out of the bike rack. I pedal as fast as I can to the hospital. Good thing we live close, I think to myself. I stop at the hospital door and run inside.

"May I help you dear??" The nurse at the reception desk says.

"Yes, I need Dr. Holcomb right now. It's an emergency." I say and look around to try and find him.

"I'll call him then. You'll need to wait a minute." She dials a number and starts speaking to Dr. Holcomb. "He'll be here in one minute." I wait there irritated. I think of Lila and her fever. Then Dr. Holcomb comes.

"Conner?? What are you doing here??" He puts his clipboard down on the counter.

"Dr. Holcomb it's Lila. She has a 102-degree fever. My parents need her special medication. Now."

He nods and rushes to his room. He hands me a bottle. "Make her take 2 drops if it gets higher make her take 4. Good luck, Conner." He leaves and I rush out. I put the medicine in my pocket and quickly pedal home. I stop in front and freeze. I hear Lila screaming for me and from the burning. I run inside and hind my parents the bottle.

"How high??" I ask my dad.

"102.5-degrees." He responds.

"Give her 2 drops. Now." He does and Lila goes completely still. My mom feels her head and shakes her head.

"We'll give it a while but Conner wait down here and watch her. We need to contact her parents about this." They leave and go up to their room.

"Conner...." Lila says sleepily.

I rush to her side and cover her up more with the blanket. "I'm here, Lila."

"It....burns...." She starts moving her hand around. I know why.

I grab her hand in mine. "I know. But Lila the medicine will kick in soon. Go to sleep."She holds my hand and falls asleep. I do too after a while.
