Chapter Two ~ Hard To Hold Back

Chapter 3

"Hey, Foster!" Keefe called, quickly catching up with her in the Foxfire hallways after the last class of the day. "You still haven't told me what's in those boxes."

"Yeah, I did," Sophie said.

"Uh-huh," Keefe mumbled. He sighed when her guilt wafted over to him. "Okay, if it's gonna give you that much guilt, please tell me. I could help," he offered, closing a little more distance between them. He almost reached for her hand, pulling away at the least second.

"Maybe..." Sophie sighed. They turned a corner towards the exit of the Elvin school.

Sophie shrugged, evidently not paying attention.

Keefe followed her gaze across the room to where his best friend was. The perfect Vacker. Something he'd never be. He kept his distance from Sophie as they approached, avoiding the glare that Fitz might give him. Of course, that wouldn't do anything anytime Keefe and Sophie were anywhere near each other.

There were clear signs of Sophie and Fitz dating. But, they had simply said nothing, after the rumor that they kissed the night Alvar disappeared. Keefe knew it was wrong since a certain pregnant alicorn interrupted it.

Fitz glanced at Keefe before turning to Sophie. "Hi," he mumbled.

"Hey," Sophie responded. The usual conversation starter. But every time it was sooo awkward. It wasn't unusual either; especially with Fitzphie. It was always like this with their emotions going every which way. But now...eh, who knows?

"Sooo," Keefe said, drawing out the word. He searched for something funny to say, but he shut his mouth before he could say anything too stupid.

It wasn't clear whether Fitz knew about Keefe's crush on Sophie, but he showed it. After confessing their feelings, Fitz had been more protective of Sophie around others...mainly boys at that matter.

More awkward silence followed, so Keefe took a step back. "I'll see you guys tomorrow." He gave a teasing salute before turning the corner.

Ro had stayed silent until their arrival at the Shores of Solace when she opened her mouth to speak.

"Don't!" Keefe stuck a hand in front of Ro's face to stop her next snarky remark.

"I was just going to say─"

"Don't wanna hear it."

She simply snickered, marching alongside him.

Having a bodyguard wasn't all bad, besides the extra stares wherever Keefe went. It was bad enough with the news of his mother out. Ro wasn't the worst, besides her almost always spilling the truth about Keefe's crush on Sophie. He'd almost let it happen too. But after the whole sort of official Fitzphie thing, he held back.

And it was hard.
