Chapter One ~ Will She Ever Love Him Back?

Chapter 2

"There's someone here to see you," Edaline called, standing at the end of the stairs. Keefe listened for Sophie's response, standing near Edaline and far enough from Grady that he didn't look like he was going to drag Keefe out. But Keefe could still hear him mutter, "That Boy."

"I'll be down in a minute," Sophie's distant voice came from her room. There was a thud, but no voice came to reassure them she was fine. Grady and Edaline gave each other a worried look.

"I'll go up and look," Keefe told them, climbing up the steps to the third floor, Sophie's room. He knocked on the closed door.

"Sorry, sorry. I'm okay. Just...dropped something." Sophie called. A few seconds passed, and the door opened. Keefe let out a small sigh of relief, hoping Sophie didn't notice.

"With you, Foster, I don't even know why we would be worried." Keefe flashed his trademark smirk.

"I know. I'm a klutz," Sophie grumbled.

"That's what makes you so special," he grinned when he saw a faint shade of pink form in Sophie's cheeks and her emotions shifted. "What were you doing in here, anyway? Did Iggy grow to some enormous size that you had to chase him around the room until you fell flat on your face?"

Sophie laughed, but her emotions said otherwise. She was....nervous. Or was it scared? It was hard to tell with the Mysterios Miss F.

"What were you doing?" Keefe asked, curious himself to know the answer.

"Going through some boxes...Biana gave me this pile of dresses. I don't know what to do with them."

"You can't lie to me, Foster. You know that." Keefe frowned.

Sophie pursed her lips. "Empaths," she grumbled.

"Really what is it? Come on, Foster!" Keefe groaned. "You can trust me."

"I know I can," Sophie gave him a weak smile that might have caught him off guard, but he didn't show it. "But now's not the time. You're here to tell me something?"

Keefe hated it when she changed the subject, but he walked through the door and sat on her bed, glancing at the boxes scattered around her room. At least she wasn't lying about that part. "Yeah. But it's not as important as whatever's going on with those," he pointed to the boxes.

Her mood shifted back to worry. "Forget about those. Don't worry. Mr. Forkle asked me to look through these."

Keefe sighed when she wasn't lying. "Fine. I um...came here because...I found this on the Foxfire grounds. Thought it might be yours since it has your name on the top." He pulled the small box, probably containing crush cuffs, which he didn't dare open and handed it to Sophie.

"Uh...thanks," Sophie quickly moved to her dresser and put the box in the top drawer.

"I would've given them to you at Foxfire, but as much as I love making a scene, since...you and Fitz are...well, it would just make things awkward." Keefe felt his cheeks burn.

"Good thinking," Sophie laughed.

"I have to go back. Daddy Dearest has planned another personal training." Keefe sighed. "You will not be late," he mimicked his father's voice.

Sophie giggled. "Have fun."

Keefe rolled his eyes, standing up from the bed and crossing the room. "Oh, I won't."

His face was still a faint red when he reached the bottom of the stairs. Grady gave him a suspicious look and Edaline smiled sweetly, watching him walk out.

He sucked in a breath and stepped through the light into the Shores of Solace, his father's ridiculous beach house. Lord Cassius's "escape" from his wife and son.

"You're late."

Keefe expected his father's voice to come from the patio, but the voice came from Ro. "Be glad you're not actually late. Your father is grumpy today," she laughed.

"Uh-huh," Keefe mumbled.

"Whaaaaat? No snarky remark or anything? Geez, what happened?" Ro studied his expression, a smirk forming across her face. "Aaaaaw, that's so sweet. Lord Hunkyhair is embarrassed. Never thought I see that again."

Keefe ignored Ro and brushed past her, through the door.

Ro followed behind him. "Oh, come on! Tell me. Pleaaase," she begged, batting her eyelashes. "What's on your mind? There has to be something."

Keefe rolled his eyes. She wasn't wrong, though. But there wasn't just something on his mind. He had too many questions.

What were in those boxes? Why was Foster lying to him? What was she keeping from him?

He pushed it aside, letting the never ending - or what it felt like - training session with his father distract him, even though it was still at the back of his mind when he plopped down on his bed, staring at the ceiling.

One question still lurking to the front of his mind.

Will she ever love him back?
