SCENE EIGHT
Chapter 8
We’re in Kerris and Jackie’s room. They are both sitting in bed, Jackie’s ankles still noticeably chained. They are deep in conversation.
KERRIS: And then he was like, ‘The stars keep shining…’ in this really dreamy voice. And then in line, he hugged me! What do you think that means?
JACKIE: (smiling slyly) I think that you have a crush on Nathan.
KERRIS: (blushing) What?
JACKIE: (with a laugh) All I ever hear about is Nathan, Kerris. I think that you are in love.
KERRIS: Okay. I might have a teensy crush on Nathan.
JACKIE: (raises her eyebrow) Might?
KERRIS: Okay, okay. I definitely have a crush on Nathan Grey.
JACKIE: See? That wasn’t so hard.
KERRIS: (annoyed but also laughing) Moving on! How are you doing?
JACKIE: Well, my ankles hurt and I’m hungry, but other than that, I guess I’m as good as you can be in a place like this.
KERRIS: You’re hungry? I’ll go get you a snack.
She hops up from her bed and runs out the door.
JACKIE: (reaching out after her) But, Kerris!-
