SCENE FIVE
Chapter 5
It's night time. We see Kerris tossing and turning fitfully. We dive into her head and into her dream. Everything is tinted orange. It seems apocalyptic, and ash rains from the sky.
Kerris is standing on one side of a rope bridge. As we watch, ten year old LUCY DONFELT starts to run across the bridge towards her when it collapses and she falls down the chasm.
(KERRIS: Luce! No!) Then she looks up. On the other side of the bridge is Mrs. Motum, holding a knife and one of the pieces of rope. We realize that she cut the bridge away.) The dream ends.
Kerris bolts upright in bed, sweaty. Her sheets are tangled and twisted. She reaches out and turns on the lamp.
KERRIS: (breathing hard) J-Jackie?
Jackie also sits up. She also looks rumpled, but she is smiling wryly when she looks at Kerris.
JACKIE: Yeah?
KERRIS: I can't stay here. Just hearing about what might happen to me is making everything worse.
JACKIE: Then run away.
KERRIS: You tried that, and you got caught.
JACKIE: I only got caught because I started talking about this place in front of people. Just stay quiet and you'll be fine.
KERRIS: Don't they have like, guard dogs or something?
JACKIE: I've been chained here for four months, remember? I couldn't tell you. But if you didn't see dogs on the way in, then there probably aren't any.
KERRIS: And should I just go out the front door?
JACKIE: Nah, use the kitchen door.
KERRIS: Well, okay. Should I take my stuff?
JACKIE: It'll slow you down, and you need to get as far as you can tonight.
Kerris nods and gets up. We watch Jackie lean over and crank the light up one more. When we turn back around, Kerris is changed into a t-shirt and jeans.
KERRIS: Okay, Jackie. I'm going to go now. Thanks for everything.
She walks out. We turn back to Jackie, who has a hopeful yet worried look on her face.
JACKIE: Oh, please let her make it.
