SCENE THREE

Chapter 3
Kerris is sitting across from counselor MRS. VERBENA. They are in the midst of talking. Kerris is in tears.

VERBENA: So how long has this been going on, Miss Donfelt?

KERRIS: (shuddering and sniffling) Ever since my sister killed herself.

VERBENA: And when was that?

KERRIS: Two years ago. I was thirteen, she was ten.

VERBENA: (quietly) And do you know why she took her own life?

KERRIS: Yes. Because I gave her terrible advice.

VERBENA: Now, dear, give me more information. I’m sure it’s not your fault.

KERRIS: My parents say it is.

VERBENA: Well, I think that they are wrong. Now, why did your sister actually pass away?

KERRIS: (she is crying more now. This is obviously hard to tell.) Her- her- her highschool mentor student was a terrible person. He- he- (bursts out yelling) I told her to ignore it! I told her that she didn’t need to be worried… I didn’t think anyone would do that to a ten-year-old girl! So she did ignore it and he turned out to be a class A creep, and she killed herself when she couldn’t take it anymore! All because I told her to act like nothing was wrong. And ever since, my parents hate me. To tell you the truth, I hate myself! I’m the reason my amazing little sister, my best friend, is dead. Luce was my life! (she breaks down, now whispering) Lucy, why’d you have to leave me?

VERBENA: No matter what you think, your sister’s death is not your fault.

KERRIS: (looks up angrily, red-eyed) Prove it.

VERBENA: (sighs) Kerris, you need help. Your parents are making you pay all the bills, you have severe depression, and you’ve been late to school everyday this year. We have to get you serious help.

KERRIS: (meekly) What do you mean?

VERBENA: I mean that we need to get you out of your house and into a home for lost kids.

KERRIS: But I’m not lost. I’m right here. (laughs nervously)

VERBENA: You know that’s not what I meant. We will put you in one of the centers for mentally disturbed kids. I know Mr. Feerel’s sister runs one, though I’ve never been to it. You’ll be our ambassador.

KERRIS: Don’t I get a say in any of this?

VERBENA: Honey, when your situation is this desperate, no. You’ll go to Mr. Feerel’s sister’s center; The Motum Home for Teens. You leave tomorrow.

Kerris sighs and it fades to black.
