Hogwarts
Chapter 3
Months passed, Christmas went by, and then Jack had his birthday.
He got up early the day he went to Hogwarts, for he would need that time for packing all his stuff.
Soon he was ready, and he ran downstairs. "Mum! Hurry up! I want to go!"
"Yes, I'm coming! I'm coming!" answered his mother, emerging from the lounge.
We went in a taxi to King's Cross. There were lots of Muggles about (Mrs Felton had told Jack exactly what Muggles were, they were non-magic, and did not have one single drop of magical blood in them.)
"Well, through the barrier," said Mrs Felton.
"Through the barrier -" but Mrs Felton had already pushed him straight into the barrier! Jack couldn't believe it when he opened his eyes and saw Platform 9/3.
"The train is going to leave in five minutes! You'd better get on, Jack."
Jack was trembling a little bit. He didn't know what Hogwarts as like, (as I have already told you) and he knew that this school was so far away. But he didn't let his mother know that he was scared, so he instead said, "Ok, mum. Um, bye, then." He hugged his mother for a long time. When they broke apart, he looked up at his mother.
His mother smiled down at him. "Don't be nervous, dear. I know you will love Hogwarts."
Jack didn't say anything, but smiled too at his mother nervously. "Yeah - I'll be fine."
His mother smiled once more at him, and then pointed to the train.
Jack nodded and then jumped onto the train. It tooted, then started to move. Jack waved and waved at his mother, still feeling very anxious. He was leaving his mother, he was all alone on this train, all alone.
But he bit his lip, and walked down the train. He wanted to find a empty compartment, not a compartment with people in it. He would make friends later, but now, he felt like he needed to be alone.
He passed a group of chattering girls, and they both smiled at him. They were twins.
"First year? Feeling nervous?" asked one of the girls. She had dark hair, with light green eyes.
"Um... yeah," said Jack, not looking up at her, but keeping his eyes fixed on the train floor.
"Yeah, it's really nerving when you're first going to go to Hogwarts. Oh, and sorry! I should have introduced myself first. Okay, I'm Allisa, and this is my twin, Elsa."
"Hi," Elsa said. She too, of course, had dark hair, with green eyes.
Jack smiled.
"You can go in this compartment with us," said Allisa.
Jack hesitated before saying, "Um, ok."
Allisa opened the compartment door and went inside it. Elsa followed her, then Jack.
There was silence for a few seconds, and then finally Allisa asked, "So, what's your name?"
"What - oh - oh, yeah. Um, my name's Jack - Jack Felton." He forced a smile.
Just then the compartment door slid open again, and a boy with light red hair stood there. He was grinning, and asked cheerily, "Hey, guys! Can I share this compartment with you?"
"Sure," said Allisa, grinning back at him.
The boy smiled, and sat down next to Jack. "Hi!" he said brightly to Jack. "So you're Jack. I heard you talking," he added.
"Oh, yeah, I am," said Jack. "Um, so what is your name?"
"I'm Hugo! Hugo Granger-Weasley."
"Oh, nice! So you're the son of Ron Granger-Weasley and Hermione Granger-Weasley!" said Jack, grinning for the first time on the train.
"Yeah - my dad is quite famous," said Hugo, chuckling.
"Of course your dad is famous! He's the best friend of the famous Harry Potter!" said Jack, sniggering.
Hugo grinned. "I spose'."
Jack leaned back in his seat. Then he asked one question. "Um, can one of you guys tell me what Hogwarts is like?"
"You mean you don't know what Hogwarts is like? said Hugo, astounded.
"Well, my parents didn't tell me exactly what Hogwarts was like..." said Jack, looking around at them all. Allisa's mouth was formed in a perfect O, and Elsa was staring at Jack like he was mad, her eyes wide and round.
Hugo mouth was hanging open, and he too, was staring at Jack.
"Well, I'm a first year," said Jack, staring back at him defiantly.
"And I'm a first year, and I know so much about Hogwarts!"
"Well, then, tell me about the things that you know, then," said Jack, and he leaned back in his chair again.
Hugo cleared his throat. "Well, I know all about the Sorting. There is a Sorting Hat, which will suit you into any of these Houses - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Gryffindor is supposed to be brave, loyal, chivalry. Hufflepuff house is -"
"Well," said Allisa loudly, interrupting him, "Why didn't your parents tell you?" she asked.
"Well, I just guess they didn't," said Jack, shrugging.
"Well, then they were quite stup -" started Hugo, but Allisa shot him the dirtiest glance she could, and then smiled her sweetest smile at Jack.
An hour passed, and Allisa said, "Maybe we should change into our robes now."
They all agreed, and soon they were dressed in them, and after about another hour, of eating sweets from the lady trolley's trolley, and chatting, the train slowed down then stopped.
"We're here!" said Elsa excitedly. She looked out of the window to see the big figure of the half-giant, Hagrid.
"Who's he?" asked Jack, pointing at Hagrid.
"Oh, he's the gamekeeper - his name is Hagrid," replied Elsa.
They got off the train, and Alissa and Elsa had to part with Hugo and Jack, because they were second years, and were supposed to be going in the carriages - with Thestrals, Allisa had said.
What on earth were they? Jack wondered.
Hugo and Jack and a little timid girl shared a boat together. Jack leaned forward and put his hand into the water, it was cold, but not too cold. Just the right temperature for swiming, he thought.
The water looked very pretty - it looked like sparkles were floating on the top.
Jack smiled, and looked up. They had passed through the vines, and he had his first look at Hogwarts. It looked wonderful.
Hugo nudged him in the side. "We're getting off," he said. "Come on!"
Hagrid led them up to the front doors of Hogwarts, and he knocked on them.
A fat man with a rounded stomach opened the door. He beamed at the students, and they all smiled back at him.
Jack passed him quickly, and Hugo ran to the front of the crowd.
"No, no no," said a voice. Jack went on tip-toes to see a thin woman, with spectacles and wearing a green velvet dress, with a pointed black witch's hat. Jack knew she was Professor McGonagall, the headmistress of the whole school. "You will be in line, Weasley," she said firmly.
"Yes, Professor," said Hugo quickly, and he ran to stand behind Jack.
"The sorting is going to begin soon, but after the song," said Professor McGonagall. "So come into the Great Hall, but stay in line."
The first year students did what they were told, and Jack gasped when he entered the Great Hall.
Candles were floating in the air, and the roof seemed to be not a roof at all, but the sky. For there were the stars, twinkling, and it seemed so real. Jack stared and stared at it, until he heard McGonagall's voice say, "The sorting will begin after the sorting hat's song!"
Then suddenly a song broke out from the Hat:
Oh,you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your tops hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell brave of heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And you won't get in a flap!
You're safe in my hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!
The Gryffindors, Slytherins, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws cheered loudly, and so did the teachers, and Headmistress, Professsor McGonagall. She stepped forward and said, "The Sorting will begin! Teshiba, Anna!"
A girl with blonde hair walked forward; she was trembling so much that Jack wouldn't be surprised if she collapsed.
"HUFFLEPUFF!" The sorting hat screamed ten seconds later. The Hufflepuff table cheered loudly.
"Young, Alis!" said Professor McGonagall.
Alis Young walked forward confidently, and put the hat on her head.
"RAVENCLAW!" The sorting hat shouted.
"Kaley, Ben."
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
"Smith, Bruce."
"SLYTHERIN!"
"MacDonald, Bailey."
"GRYFFINDOR!"
"Aswith, Clara."
"RAVENCLAW!"
"Habith, Chloe!"
"GRYFFINDOR!"
It went on like that, and then finally Hugo's name was called.
"Granger-Weasley, Hugo," called Professor McGonagall.
Hugo walked forward quickly, and he looked at the other students as he passed. Some of them did thumbs up, and others mouthed, "Good luck."
Hugo smiled at them, and then he sat on the stool, inhaled, then put the hat on. The crowd waited eagerly.
"GRYFFINDOR!" shouted the Hat.
Hugo ran forward to the cheering Gryffindors, and one Gryffindor made room for him on the bench.
Jack did thumbs up to him, and Hugo returned it, grinning.
It seemed like forever until his name was called. Jack's name.
He walked forwards slowly to the hat - his eyes were on nothing else.
Hundreds of pairs of eyes looked at him, but Jack pretended not to notice.
He lifted up the hat from the stool, sat down on it, then put the hat on his head. The crowd waited breathlessly, watching him.
Then a little voice said, "Hmmm. Interesting."
Jack was so surprised that he jumped and several people laughed at him.
The little voice continued. "Yes. Interesting. You might belong in Ravenclaw... you are wise... yes... but kind, stubborn, and loyal, fair... hmm." Jack realised that the Hat was speaking. He held his breath. He didn't really mind about what house he was going to be put in.... he wouldn't care if he was put in Gryffindor, or Slytherin, or the others.
"Yes, well. I think you should be put in... HUFFLPUFF!"
