Diagon Alley

Chapter 2

Mrs Felton had told Jack that he would need to go to Diagon Alley before he went to Hogwarts. She had told him he needed a wand, a cauldron, black school robes matching with a black wizard's hat, also lots of school books. And Mrs Felton had also told him that if he wanted, he could take a pet with him. "You can take a owl, a frog, or a cat."
"Can't you take a mouse?" Jack asked. He held up his little mouse, Jeremy. Jeremy was light brown, with white on his chest.
"Well, yes, I suppose. I don't think Minerva McGonagall will mind."
"Good. And mum, is Headmistress McGonagall nice?"
"Well, I had her as my Transfiguration teacher but I still I don't know much about her - I had Dumbledore as my headmaster." Mrs Felton's face was grim.
She obviously was remembering about when Dumbledore had died.

Soon they arrived at Diagon Alley.
It was quite crowded. Wizards and witches were walking around, some of them talking busily to their friends and others looking in shop windows. A crowd of people were looking at The Firebolt.
"I think you should get your books first," said Mrs Felton, as they passed a laughing couple, one's hat falling off in his laughter.
"Um, okay," said Jack, not really paying attention to her. He was still looking around Diagon Alley - he had never been in a place like that, for sure.
Flourish and Blotts was such a cool place. The walls were tottered with books, all sorts of books - but mostly about subjects, like Transfiguration, (Jack wondered what that was) and History of Magic, and Potions, and Charms, and Hogwarts - a History
Jack got his books,The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1 by Miranda Goshawk, A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot, Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling, A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore, and Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger. The manager of Flourish and Blotts was a nice, cheery man. "First year? You know, the first year at Hogwarts is always the best - wish I could go there again." He smiled, then waved them off.
"Mum, is that true? Is your first year at Hogwarts always the best?" asked Jack, looking up at his mother.
"Yes, well I think so too." She smiled.
Soon Jack had got his cauldron, his robes and a pointed black hat, and all he had to get was his wand now. He was excited to get it. His wand would be the most important thing he needed.
"Mum, hurry!" he said impatiently, for his mother had stopped and looked into Twilfitt & Tattings.
"Yes, I'm coming," said Mrs Felton.
They entered the shop. Jack looked around. Sitting at a desk, was a man. He looked quite old - he had some wrinkles on his face and he had a little moustache, and was wearing spectacles. He looked up.
"Um..." Jack looked up at his mother before saying, "Um, hi."
The man stood up abruptly, he looked quite angry for a second, but then his face relaxed. "I am sorry," he said, smiling kindly. "I thought - ah, you were a different person. My mistake."
"That's okay," said Jack, smiling back. He decided he liked this person.
"You have come for your wand - always the favourite part, isn't it? When I was a little keen child, I loved the part when I went into Ollivanders. It was like the biggest treat to me."
Jack nodded earnestly.
The man nodded as well, still smiling. "Ah, and I should have introduced myself. I am Tomas, Tomas Ollivander. Related to the famous wandmaker, (and I am one myself, as you can see) Gerrick Ollivander. Yes. Yes. Yes." Then he looked up at Mrs Felton.
"I am Rivera Felton, and this is my son, Jack Felton," she said.
"Nice, very nice. Now," Tomas said loudly, "Shall we get a few wands out?"
Jack nodded again, grinning at old Tomas.
got up from his chair, and wobbled over to the shelves that were fulled with thin boxes, (obviously with wands in them). Some of the thin boxes were coated with dust.
Tomas took one thin box down, and put it on his desk. Then he took the wand out. "Twelve inches, slightly springy, phoenix core."
He held out the wand. Jack took it from him curiously, looking down at it. It was light brown, with patterns on it.
He gave it a swish, and immediately glass broke. "Oh! Sorry, Mr Ollivander!"
"That is quite alright," said Tomas kindly, and with a flick of his own wand, the damage was instantly fixed.
Jack went through three more wands, which weren't good for him. Finally, Tomas took out another wand. "Ten inches, slightly yielding, dragon heartstring core," said Tomas quietly.
Jack took a deep breath, then waved the wand. Instantly he felt a warmth in his fingers, and red sparks shot out from the wand.
"Yes! Yes! Very good, very good!" cried Tomas, clapping his hands.
Mrs Felton beamed.
Jack felt very happy. He had his wand. This wand had chosen him... this wand.

Jack got home after that - he was still holding his wand and he kept looking down at it.
"Hmm... Ten inches, slightly yielding, dragon heartstring core," Mrs Felton kept murmuring to herself. "Very nice. My wand was twelve inches, unicorn core, supple."
"Oh," said Jack, not really listening. He looked down at his wand once more. It was a black wand, with lots of patterns on it. More red sparks shot out from it.
"But Jack, please don't play with your wand around the house," said Mrs Felton. "You know, you are not allowed to use magic in the house. If you do, you might not be able to go to Hogwarts!"
"I won't," said Jack immediately. "I won't play with my wand. I won't." His wand was precious to him, very precious.

One day, he was walking down the street, with Jeremy in his hoodie pocket.
"Hey! Jack!" shouted a voice from behind him.
Jack spun around to see three big boys, much bigger than him. He instantly recognised them as his muggle friends.
"Um - oh, hey," said Jack awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck. "Hey, guys. How're you doing?"
The biggest of the boys spoke up, ignoring Jack's question. "We heard you were going to this school. What kind of school is it, Felton?"
Jack was startled. His friends had never called him by his last name. But he answered, "Just a school." He shrugged.
Brian, (the biggest of the boys) sniggered. Then he turned to his best friends, Will and Bruno. "But Bruno, you said you heard Mrs Felton say Wizarding School, didn't you?"
Bruno nodded earnestly.
Brian turned back to Jack. "Is that true? Are you going to some sort of stupid Wizarding School?"
"No, no no guys! Mum must have been going berserk!" Jack said quickly, backing away. "Guys, what are you talking about?"
"We always thought something unusual was in you. You were always were doing weird enough things, and how on earth did you get on top of the teacher's house when the bully boys were chasing you? How Jack?"
"I just climbed, didn't I?" Jack said, still backing away. The muggles were coming closer to him, leering.
Jack quickly pretended to check his watch. "Oh, dinner! I forgot, we were having it early today!" and then he ran off, and didn't glance behind his shoulder once.
