Cawley Harton, Jaffrey Dunson, and Raichelle Choi were born on Christmas morning. The precise times were December 25, 2003, 3:57, 3:59, and 4:01 AM. The nurses say that all three babies did not cry; instead, they stared up at all the medical staff peacefully. Everyone sensed that the babies would be connected somehow, and soon, they would all know why. A story about three teens who were more than just, well, teens. They were spies.

Lee stretched out on the recliner, a yawn forcing itself from his lips. Jaff was in the other chair, hard at work on their case report. Rai was resting on the couch, sound asleep from the stress of the day. Lee looked at her, worried, until her mouth turned up in a contented smile. Whatever she was dreaming was bringing her peace. He just hoped it wasn’t of Aydeen.
Jaff cleared his throat to get Lee’s attention. Lee turned to Jaff and nodded, indicating that he should go on.
“So, I finished the case report. I think Rai is doing a good job so far, and she made a great impression on Aydeen.”
“I’m worried about her, though,” Lee said, “I mean, look at her! She’s completely spent.”
“I know, but it’s the best chance we’ve got right now. She’s a strong girl, Lee. She is strong enough to do this.” Jaff looked over at Rai, her black hair splayed out across the pillow. Lee followed his gaze, and despite his worry, his lips parted into a smile when he looked at his sleeping girlfriend.
“You’re right, Jaff. She is strong.”
At that moment, Rai opened her eyes and stretched. She sat up, wincing as she rolled her stiff neck once. Swinging her legs down towards the ground, she yawned,
“So, what are y’all talking about?” Lee and Jaff looked at each other, embarrassed.
“Ummmm,” Lee started, but Rai interrupted him,
“You were talking about me again, weren’t you?” Jaff nodded in sheepish confirmation. Rai rolled her eyes and slugged Lee in the arm.
“What did I do?” he whined.
“You started the conversation, didn’t you?” Rai raised an eyebrow.
“Okay, but-”
“Just teasing you,” Rai laughed. “Look, sometimes, our work scares me. Sometimes, I feel uncomfortable. But I know that everything will turn out fine! The government wouldn’t let us get hurt.” Lee wasn’t sure that was true, but he did not want to freak Rai out, so he nodded his head, murmuring,
“Of course.” Rai smiled at him, and in that moment, he saw in her eyes that she really didn’t believe what she had said. She knew they were never really safe, but she kept her hopes up that maybe, she would end up being okay. Lee felt so proud of Rai; though frightened and confused, she always put her head up and kept that smile on her face. She saw him looking at her, and with a soft look of understanding, she moved over to the recliner and slid down next to him. She placed a hand on his cheek, saying,
“We’re going to be okay,” she looked at Jaff, too, “we’re going to be okay.”
“Sometimes, I wish I was a normal kid. I wish that I had a normal family.” Lee broke down. “But then I wouldn’t have both of you.” He gave them both a shaky smile. Jaff and Rai shared a secret smile; they barely ever saw their leader’s tender side, but they had just had that chance.
“Bro, we are your family! You don’t need to ever worry. We will always be here for you.” Rai rubbed Lee’s arm, a soft look in her eyes. Jaff got up, and the three geniuses enveloped each other in a group hug.
Once they stepped back, Rai decided to tell them about Aydeen kissing her.
“He walked me to class, and then right as I was walking in, I thought that maybe I should pretend to like him so I turned around to say goodbye, and he leaned down and kissed me! Like, dude, I just met him today!” Rai put her head in her hands. She could feel a headache starting. Lee started to rub her back as she looked up in despair,
“I mean, I know I have to do this. We have to save the government for goodness sakes! But seriously, it’s like our bosses think I’m a robot. I have FEELINGS, you know!” she burst out as she started to cry. Lee and Jaff looked at each other, stricken. Rai had had moments like this before, and usually, it took a long time to get her settled down. Lee looked helplessly at Rai, stroking her hair with his hand.
“C’mon, Rai. Let’s not get upset! I know it’s hard. But we will get through it. Just like Jaff and I were talking about,” here was a chance to redeem himself, “you are one of the strongest, most amazing people I know.” Rai took a deep breath, calmed herself down.
“Okay. Yes, we’re going to be fine,” she said. “I just have to keep telling myself that.” Lee and Jaff shared relieved expressions as they saw Rai calming down. Her heartbrokenness had been cured for one night, but her internal struggles were obviously wearing her out, so she excused herself and went to bed.
Lee and Jaff both sat in their chairs, silent, until Jaff remarked,
“Girls are confusing.” Lee laughed,
“Have you only just realized that, Jaff?”
“Well, no, but tonight really made it clear. I mean, wow.” Lee nodded in agreement.
“I feel bad for her. She has no one who will understand what she’s going through, no mother to guide her through her teenage years. I mean, I’m sure it’s hard enough being a normal girl, but for Rai… it’s gotta be hard.” He shook his head in sadness. Soon, Lee and Jaff went to bed, but all throughout the night, Lee kept thinking, Poor Rai.
