Chapter 1
Asher Boswell’s mother was dead. She lay still and lifeless. The only thing he could do was fulfill her last wish; to go and find his twin brother, Brian, who had been missing since birth. With his mother and father both dead, Brian was the only family he had left. He just had to find him.

With a forlorn heart, Asher packed his bags with enough supplies for days. The only thing he knew was that Brian was in Leona, three days of traveling. It was quite a big town. Sighing, he stuffed more of his possessions into his sack. Then, he carefully pulled the family map off the wall. It had every town in the kingdom on it. Asher was sure Brian was in Leona.

Stepping out of his small shack, he turned down the dirt road. Whistling a tune, he stuck the map in his pack and turned north. As he traveled the road, he became distracted, and soon he ran right into someone. He jumped back up, apologizing quickly. He helped the person up. It was a girl, probably a few years younger than him. She had brown hair, only a few shades lighter than Asher’s. She introduced herself as Dera.

“Everyone in our town knows that you’re going on this quest. I want to come with you. Please?” Asher questioned her, asking why, but all she said was that he needed a friend. After some thought, he rolled his eyes and agreed to let her accompany him.

They set out again, traveling down the trail. Dera had a sack across her shoulders, as well. Asher took one last look behind at their childhood town, and stepped into his new adventurous life.

They spent the next three days traveling towards Leona. Throughout the days, Dera would not shut up. Oh, Asher had asked her politely and not so politely, but the girl was a complete chatterbox. She told him all about her family and friends. Asher had already known a little bit about her, but he hadn’t known this much. He certainly didn’t need to know this much now.

That night, his perspective on Dera changed. They sat at a pub in town, having just arrived. Asher had no money, but Dera bought good food for both of them. Then, she listened intently to Asher’s plan about where Brian would most likely be. They were paying for a room upstairs when a big hunky dude came up to them.

He wore a black leather jacket. He had blond, slicked back hair and blue eyes. He introduced himself as Antonius. He was a deserter from the army, and they hadn’t been able to find him for years. Technically, he was an outlaw, but when he asked if they needed help, Asher said yes. Antonius bought them another round of drinks, and started racking his brains for anyone who might be able to help them find the elusive Brian. He seemed to have a lot of connections.

That night, the three companions shared a room, Dera on the bed and the boys on the floor. After several hours of sharing stories and becoming unbelievably close, they fell asleep.

The next morning, the search was on. The first place they were going to look was in the records at the town hall. They might know what Brian did for a living.

The lady at the desk sorted through her files. There wasn’t a lot to go on. Besides the fact that Brian had only come to the town hall once ten years ago when he was fourteen, he hadn’t told them what he did, they just knew he spent his days at one of the two hospitals in Leona. Antonius thanked the lady and led them out. He had snagged a map from the front desk, and opening it, he marked both of the hospitals so they could visit them until they found Brian.

The team entered Lee Everett Hospital’s giant entrance. The bright lights shined as they walked over to the help desk. There was a long line and they stepped into it. It inched along, crazy slow. Asher tapped his foot, annoyed that it was taking so long. A passing girl noticed this and came up to him.

“You need something?”

“We’re looking for a Brian Boswell?” She flung her red hair over her shoulder, telling him that no Brian Boswells worked there. But, of course, this girl, Brekkin, would love to help them find him. She told Asher excitedly,

“I’m a sucker for quests!” Asher rolled his eyes but welcomed her to the team. The more the merrier. She smirked and immediately launched into conversation with Dera. It seemed that the two would get along well.

The second hospital was across the town. The four trekked through nice streets and not so nice alleys. In one of the not so nice alleys, they met a little orphan girl, a toddler, who latched onto Brekkin. Of course, this little girl had to be part of their squad. Brekkin and Dera called her Rosalie.

Rosalie had little wisps of blond hair that clung to her scalp. Her big, princess-like eyes shone like sapphires. She was tiny, malnourished, and abandoned, but she still giggled with happiness.

Because they had found Rosalie, instead of traveling to the next hospital, they found a nice inn and started to care for Rosalie. She was in need of food and loving care, and thankfully, the foursome could do that. Brekkin gave Rosalie’s little split ends a trim while Asher spoon fed her some carrots mashed into sludge. Dera and Antonius were talking about how to keep Rosalie the most safe. She likely was going to have to be carried throughout their journey. Asher fastened a harness with his pack so he could carry Rosalie on his back. Dera and Brekkin created a little crib for Rosalie as well, and Rosalie loved it. She giggled, climbing out of it, and then ran over to Asher and plopped down in his lap. He laughed and bounced her on his knees. Then, pointing at Rosalie, he said,

“Rosalie.” Rosalie repeated him,

“Rose-yee.” Asher smiled, and then, pointing to himself said,

“Asher.” Rosalie shook her little head and pointed at Asher with a loud,

“Da-da.” Asher shook his head.

“No, Asher.” Rosalie’s little eyes filled with tears. She stomped her foot, yelling,

“No! Da-da!” Brekkin scolded Asher, telling him to let her call him Da-da. She reminded him that Rosalie most likely didn’t remember her biological dad, and Asher was as close as she could get. Asher sighed and turned back to Rosalie, consenting to the name ‘Da-da’. He scooped Rosalie up and rocked her back and forth like he remembered his dad doing for him when he was young. She giggled and reached her fingers towards his face. He laughed too, and holding on to her hands, swung her around. Brekkin pointed out immediately that he was taking his new title quite seriously. He glared at her, but there was laughter in his eyes. He didn’t feel as lost anymore.

The next morning, it was bittersweet to leave the inn where so many memories had been made. Still, they packed their bags and set off, Rosalie on Asher’s back. She tugged on his hair as they walked across the city to the hospital. This one was the Leona Central Hospital.

The entrance was even bigger than the one at Lee Everett Hospital. It had revolving doors and the smell of cleaner wafted out into the street. Asher took a deep breath and led them in. Antonius immediately slouched onto a bench, telling them that it was probably best if he kept a low profile. Dera rolled her eyes, muttering the word ‘excuses’ under her breath. Brekkin ran over to grab a spot in the help line before it got too long, and Asher, Dera, and Rosalie hurried after her. Soon, they got to the front. A lady with curly blond hair that couldn’t possibly be real sat at the desk. She said in a simpering tone the line that everyone knows:

“Hello, I’m Sheila, how may I help you?” Asher smiled a simpering smirk right back and replied,

“We’re looking for a Brian Boswell?” Sheila immediately adopted a frown. She quickly told them that he no longer worked there and that they should see if he was at the cemetery. Asher raised an eyebrow but directed his fellow questers back to where Antonius sat.

“I guess he must be a gravedigger or something. We passed a cemetery on the way, let’s go look there.” Antonius shrugged and, taking the map, led the party out the door. Rosalie tugged on Asher’s head again, chattering to the air. They walked down the road, finally coming to the black, ornate gate that marked the entrance to the cemetery. Asher set Rosalie down, and the others let him go in by himself. He walked among the headstones, looking for a groundskeeper or someone else. He was walking along when a familiar name caught his eye- Boswell. It was a very small headstone, and he brushed off the dirt to see the first name. When he saw it, he gave a little gasp and felt tears prick his eyes. The headstone read:

Brian Boswell
He shouldn’t have died this young
October 1983-September 1998

He dropped to his knees, tears streaming down his face. His twin had died one month after their fifteenth birthday, nine long years ago. He didn’t have any family left. He was the only one. Standing up, he slowly drifted back towards the entrance. So that’s what Sheila had meant when she told him to look in the cemetery. He shook his head sadly; not only was he an orphan, he didn’t have anybody. Or at least he thought.

He walked through the gate to where his team stood. The minute he was in view, Rosalie catapulted into his arms.

“Da-da!” she yelled. Asher caught her, and her smile lit him up a bit, but then reality sank back in.

“He died nine years ago. I found his tombstone.” Asher shook his head, tears coming again. Brekkin hugged Asher, a sympathetic look on her face. He cried into her shoulder and then lifted his eyes again.

“I don’t have any family left!” Dera shook her head the minute this outburst came out of his mouth.

“You’re wrong. Look at us, Asher. We are so tight knit. We know everything about each other. This is a family. Family isn’t just biological. Family is the people you love most. The five of us are a family.” Asher looked at her and nodded. She was right. These people were his family.

And so they started home.
