Chapter 3
That day, practice was twenty minutes away at the big practice stadium. We had it till six, and then another team had it, and then another… you get the idea. We got the lucky slot.
I walked in and no one was there. It was black. I turned on the lights and gasped.
"Surprise!" my team yelled. I put my hands up to my mouth, smiling like I had just won the lottery.
There was a table covered in treats that would make us all fat. There was another table piled high with presents. I took it all in, spinning around in awe. Then I dumped my backpack on the ground and leaped onto my brothers in the best group hug in history; the kind where you can't breathe by the end and your ribs are sore the rest of the day.
We gathered around the food table and snacked to our hearts' content before they sat me down in front of the gift table. One by one, they hand me their gifts.
Felix gave me a t-shirt that said 'Compared to the sea otters, you are worthless.'
Mickey gave me a charm bracelet that had a charm for each of us.
Hunt gave me a pack of Twizzlers that he knew I would eventually give back to him after trying- and failing- to like them.
Brody gave me a henna tattoo kit. (What did he think I needed that for?)
Tom gave me a box of fireworks. I handed them right back.
Prince gave me a locket that had a picture of me holding a bunch of waterbottles and a picture of the team. It said 'Mossy' on the outside.
Monty gave a silver bracelet decorated with leaves.
Ash gave me a vanilla-cinnamon scented candle.
Nev gave me a picture frame that said 'my brothers' on top with a picture of the team in it.
Teddy gave me a Gatorade water bottle. As if I haven't seen enough of those.
Spinach handed me a box of kale before pulling a hair clip covered in sea otters out of his pocket.
I know most of these gifts sound like jokes to you. But I loved and cherished each and every one. Turns out kale is good sauteed!
Finally, Donny handed me his gift. It was a photo album that had 'Mossy's Football Memories' written across the front. I opened it, and there were pages upon pages of photographs, each captioned.
There was a picture of me dropping an armful of water bottles titled 'Mossy's first day.'
There was a picture of me on Monty's back, titled 'Victory piggybacks!'
There was a picture of Prince and I, titled Mossy and Prince's first date. Oh, I didn't mention that, did I? Yes, Prince and I are dating. But it's not, like, a widely known thing. It's almost a joke by now. Except if one of us cheated, it would be pretty bad. Anyway, back to the story.
There were group pictures, pictures of me in action, pictures of me dancing down the bus aisle, pictures of the boys signing petitions. Pictures of Prince and I kissing. Pictures of Coach yelling at us kissing. A picture of me kissing Brody for a dare. (Why was Donny so caught up on the kissing?)
All the memories of the last year and a half were on these pages. Joyful tears pricked my eyes. I squeezed Donny tight,
"Thanks, Bro. This means a lot to me."
"Awww, it's no biggie," he said, though I could tell he was happy I liked it.
Brody pulled out his cell phone and we all scootched in for a selfie. He put his phone away and Coach walked over.
"Can we start practice now? Oh, and happy birthday, Mossy."
I smiled. What an awesome family I had!
