Chapter 2
Junior Year
I went to school on my seventeenth birthday not expecting much. Of course, my football brothers would make a big deal out of it, but I didn’t really have any other friends. Yes, I know it’s weird that football season was still going on November 24, but I have to explain something about our sports program (along with the other schools’ sports programs in the city.)
The only boys’ sport in all of the programs is football. I don’t know why; that’s just how it’s always been. But therefore, football is all year round. They have this indoor city stadium for during the winter.
Anyway, when I walked up to our lunch table, all of the boys cheered quite loudly. Donny stood up and hugged me.
“You’re seventeen now!” he exclaimed.
“I know,” I said. Plopping down between Brody and Felix, I opened my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
“Ooooh! How’d you know to bring me a sandwich?” Brody said, plucking the sandwich from my hands.
“Hey!” I said, my mouth already full of my first bite. Undeterred by my germs, Brody took a bite.
“Thanks for the lunch, Mossy!” I glared.
“Well, if you’re going to steal my lunch, then I’ll just have to steal yours!” I grabbed his cold pizza and took a huge chomp out of it before realizing that it was covered in red pepper.
“How do you like it?” Felix smirked. “The prank was meant for Brody, but it worked on you, too!”
In case you didn’t figure it out, Felix and Brody are brothers. Felix is a senior, along with Prince, Donny, Monty, Ash, and Hunt. Brody is a junior, along with Nev, Teddy, Mickey, Tom, and Spinach. Oh, and me, of course.
“Oh, Felix. Come on. It’s her birthday, after all!” Monty said. I gave him a watery smile in return.
“That’s the funny part!” Felix guffawed. Brody leaned around me and punched Felix’s shoulder.
“Calm down, Bro.”
“You stole her sandwich,” Felix pointed out.
You see why I call them my brothers?
Brody handed me my half-eaten sandwich back. In turn, I gave him the peppered pizza. Which Ash stole because he likes spicy food, which in turn made Brody steal Ash’s BLT. By now, we were all getting loud, and people were looking at us weird.
“Guys, don’t embarrass me on my birthday!” I exclaimed. They immediately quieted down, before Spinach asked.
“So what is this week’s petition?” I grinned and pulled it out.
“Banning soda from school.” Tom choked on his sandwich.
“You are officially not my friend anymore.” I rolled my eyes.
“There’s a reason, Tom!” He narrowed his eyes.
“Uh-huh.” I continued on without letting Tom get me down.
“Whenever someone drinks a soda, they just throw the can away in the garbage.”
“Okay, so?” Tom blinked.
“Then that waste goes in the ocean! And animals die because of the cans! If I could, I would ban soda everywhere!”
I was starting to get frazzled, because Felix put his arms around me and pushed my head into his shoulder.
“Calm down, Mossy.” Mickey agreed, saying,
“Yes, please!” I sighed, my face still smashed against Felix’s muscles. Thankfully, Prince came to my rescue.
“Ahhh, let her go, Felix. Chivalry, and all that.” Felix begrudgingly relented but whispered,
“Please calm down, Moss.” I took several deep breaths and then gave them my saleslady smile.
“Now, who’s going to sign? If you get nineteen other signatures besides your own, you get a foot massage tomorrow after the game on the bus ride back!” All the boys except Tom grabbed copies and pens to convince others to sign.
“What’s wrong, Tom?” He looked up at me.
“No soda? At all?” I shrugged,
“Save the oceans, save the world!” He rolled his eyes and looked towards Prince, who was convincing the cheerleaders to sign. I sighed.
“Look, Tom. Maybe you don’t want to give up soda, but this is important to me! Please? You’ll get the first massage!” Tom took the paper and walked off. I grinned. This was the best part; they got my petitions signed! So far, we had gotten Yoplait, fruit nectar, and Monster banned. I would have tried for Gatorade, but my boys needed it for practice.
Soon the boys walked back.
“Each of you, how many signatures including your own?” They knew that they had to get a multiple of ten or I’d go mad.
“What about you?” Donny asked. I laughed.
“I got ninety-nine parents to sign. Then I signed. I’m all set.” Donny’s mouth hung open, but he quickly shut it and said,
“I got twenty signatures. “Then Felix stepped up,
“Me, too.” Hunt, Monty, Spinach, Mickey, and Nev also got twenty. Then Ash stepped up and handed me thirty. Tom had ten. Teddy had thirty. Brody got forty. And then Prince stepped up with a whopping sixty signatures.
“Thanks, Prince! That makes 420 signatures!” I glowed with pride as I collected his sheet. We were slowly saving the world.
The bell rang just as the principal took my stack of petitions.
He agreed not to tell people that I was the one who had gotten soda banned in school. That would make me even less popular. Of course, I’d always have my boys.
