Hogwarts House Founders (informational)

Chapter 12

Hogwarts House Founders

We all know the four founders of the Hogwarts houses, but not everyone knows their backstories. Here you can learn about the four famous Hogwarts house founders.

Godric Gryffindor, the “Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor” lived at Godric’s Hollow. He was known for his bravery, and was an accomplished dueller. His sword was created for him by Ragnuk the First, the finest of the goblin silversmiths. This sword came to be known as “The sword of Gryffindor.” According to legend, Godric was the one who gave the Sorting Hat to Hogwarts, so that once himself and the other four founders were gone, students could still be sorted into their houses. The hat contains the intelligence of all founders.

Helga Hufflepuff, “from valley broad” was just and loyal and she didn't judge any student due to their talents or what families they came from. She also vowed that she would “teach the lot.” She was skilled at Charms and she used those skills to prepare food, a speciality of hers being the ability to create marvellous feasts. The recipes that she used are still used in the Hogwarts kitchens to this day and, if you look you will find a portrait of her in the Hufflepuff common room, toasting her students with her golden cup.

Salazar Slytherin, “from fen”, was a cruel man who had the idea that only those who were from magical families should attend Hogwarts, therefore any Muggle Born witches of wizards wouldn't be accepted, while his fellow founders disagreed. After a fued with Godric, Salazar left Hogwarts, but not before he created a secret room inside the castle. In this room he placed a statue of himself and a monster inside that only he could control. That room was the Chamber of Secrets. Salazar was a talented wizard, skilled in Legilimency and Parseltongue, and although he was cruel, not all of Salazar’s legacy was bad as Isolt Sayre, a very distant descendant of his, who went on to find Ilvermorny School.

Rowena Ravenclaw, ”from glen”, was an extraordinarily brilliant witch, however, her story is one of tragedy. She is best known for her love of learning and her wit. The diadem she wore was said to grant the wearer wisdom. Rowena's daughter, Helena, stole the diadem and ran off with it in jealousy. Rowena kept this a secret from her fellow founders and didn't tell them, even when she fell ill. She was so desperate to see her daughter one last time, that she sent a man to bring Helena home. That man was the Bloody Baron, who was head over heels with Helena. She refused to return home, so the Bloody Baron stabbed her in a rage. After hearing of this, poor Rowena died of a broken heart. The ghost of Helena became the ghost of Ravenclaw and often roams the corridors in complete silence.
