Chapter 3
INGRIDIENTS
-a potion is a magical mixture of magical, mundane and transitional ingridients
-each of these ingredients have their own effectsthat can help or hinder the human body
-when we place these ingredients in a couldron and add thermal and magical energy, it makes those ingridients to restucture themselves and to form new chemicals and compounds.
COMPOUND
- is a single substance formed by two or more athoms
-a compouns is defined by being formed by the same molecule over and over again
MIXTURE
-a mixture combines two or more compounds toghether
-a mixture can either be considered heterogeneous or homogeneous
-a potion is a mixture of compounds. a potion combines multiple compounds in the couldron, water, magical ingridients and mundane ingridients
SOLUTIONS
- a solution is a tipe of mixture
-a solution is when there is a smaller amount of a substance, known as a solute, spreads troughout a greater quantity of another substance, known as the solvent.
PHASES AND PHASE TRANSITIONS
-Solids, liquids and gases are composed of basic units known as atoms and molecules
-there is one more substance ofthen called the fourth state of the matter, known as plasma
-a phase transition is the term for when one of these phases pases to another
TRANSITION NAME-------------------------------INITIAL PHASE-----------------------FINAL PHASE
melting-----------------------------------------------------solid----------------------------------------liquid--------
sublimation------------------------------------------------solid-----------------------------------------gas-----------
freezing----------------------------------------------------liquid------------------------------------------solid-------
evaporation/Boiling------------------------------------liquid--------------------------------------gas------------
deposition------------------------------------------------gas-------------------------------------------solid---------
condensation---------------------------------------------gas------------------------------------------liquid---------
WHAT MAKES A POTION WORK
-the different components combiding do not simply react on their own
-in brewing potions, it requires the energy or heat as well as the magic in your wand in order to initiate a reaction in the ingredients. The order you add the ingridients is important because it enables certain ingridients to react in a specific way as the potion is brewed. this reaction causes the bonds of molecules to create something brand new
