The New Sorting Hat
Chapter 3
All the first year students had filed into a nice fat line in the middle of the great hall. The chandeliers hung above from what seemed like nothing, as on the enchanted ceiling stars swirled above. The students all oohed and aahed and James squirmed underneath his brother's , and friend's grip on both of his arms. "Hey!" He muttered. "I promise I won't cause any trouble!" He protested. "You already have, crazy!" Scorpius whispered back at his younger friend recalling how James had, not but a few moments ago, almost set his robe on fire by tripping into a candelabra. James sighed. "Sorry.." And he finally let his arms go limp. Scorpius rolled his yes and the two released him. Luna stood before the group, a house elf by her side. She smiled brightly at the children. "Alright! Please, let's have some quiet now." She said in a chiming voice. The four rows of tables all stared at us. Gryffindor, winking and waving at Albus and James and Slytherin, a few nodding their heads in Scorpius's direction. Then, a older witch-very very old looking- stood up in emerald green robes. "And now, the sorting shall begin." She said in a raspy voice. Albus took a deep breath. "You know, if you don't want to be in Slytherin that bad, you can tell the sorting hat." His father, Harry had told him, then adding. "But one if the men you were named after was the bravest man I ever new, he was a Slytherin." James was jumping, his feet in contact with the ground though, and Scorpius merely watched as the first name was called. "Rose Wealsey.." The first years moved back into twi sides ad a young witch with fiery bright orange red hair passed through. She nervously climbed up into wooden stool in front of the room and Luna placed a white hat on her head. The white hat emitted a flash of green. "Slytherin." Luna announce, but it sounded like more of a question. Rose look frantically at the Gryffindor table before finally walking over to sit with the Slytherins. They appeared just as confused as she was. Albus cocked his head to the side. "Somethings wrong.." He whispered in Scorpius's ear. Scorpius merely shrugged "Lorcan Scamander." A boy now passed through and sat down on the chair. He looked calmly at he crowd and grinned. "Ravenclaw." Luna announced, again, unsure as the hat pulsed blue. Lorcan widened his eyes and glared at the hat, which was now off his head and laying in the stool. Luna frowned. "Go on, Lorcan.." She said to her son. He finally trudged over the Ravenclaw table. "Lyssander Scamander." Luna called from the list. As her second son, and twin of Lorcan sat down in the stool she watched the hat closely. Lyssander squirmed and twiddled with his thumbs. Green. "Slytherin?" Luna announced. He frowned. Lyssander froze and stood rigid. His hands shook and a few boys from Slytherin laughed. Luma nudged his shoulder and whispered quickly into his ear. He stood a bit straighter and went to go seat with Rose. "There is something wrong with the hat I tell you.." Albus whispered to Scorpius. "Nah. That's stupid." He said and then his name was called. He waltzed right up to the stool and sat upon it like a king to be crowned. The hat was lowered and a few seconds passed. The yellow light passed out through the crowd. Everyone was silent. "What?" Scorpius demanded stepping down from the stool. He began walking towards the Slytherin table. "Scorpius.." Luna said pausing. He turned back and looked at her, scowling. "You're in hufflepuff..." She said trailing off. His silvery eyes grew large and his jaw dropped. "No!" He said. He looked up to see his father, sitting in Potions chair, the same expression on his face. "That is absurd, Loo- luna!" He called from his place. Luna crinkled her brow and looked up at the lady with the emerald robes. She raised an eyebrow and scratched at her grey hair. "I suppose he may go into Slytherin." She said just as unsure as Luna. Draco and Scorpius relaxed. "
