Enchanted details #2: McGonagall’s love decision
Today’s Harry Potter detail that could have changed the whole plot story is McGonagall’s love decision! As we know Professor McGonagall was a Hogwarts Transfigurations Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft, and Wizardry. At first she didn’t want to be a teacher, she wanted to work in the Ministry.
Minerva grew up with her father who was a Muggle, and her mother who was a witch. Her mother, and father had fallen deeply in love when they were younger, and married. But Isobel her mother, was a witch in hiding. His father didn’t know about magic. When Minerva was born she started presenting magical abilities. Isobel had to make excuses for every tiny thing, much to the concern of her husband. Robert McGonagall was a good, honest man. He was worrying more, and more about his family.
One day Isobel cracked. Robert had asked, and asked. She couldn’t take it anymore. She showed him her wand, and told him about magic. He of course still loved his wife, but was very shocked at the discovery, and at the fact that Isobel had kept it from him. Minerva remembered that the love was still there, but they bond was broken. The trust was broken.
After graduating from Hogwarts Minerva McGonagall returned to her home, before going to London for a position in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. As fate would have it she fell in love with a Muggle boy named Dougal McGregor. They shared a sense of humor, they argued, and they wondered if they could be something else. In a short time Dougal proposed. Minerva was so happy she agreed, but when she went to bed she had some thoughts.
Dougal didn’t know about magic. If she married him, they had to live a life with no wand, lying, teaching their children to lie about who they are, just as the life she had lived with her parents. On top of everything she wouldn’t be able to work in the Ministry. Very upset she returned the next day, and told Dougal she didn’t want to marry him anymore. She left him devastated, and went to London to make a career in the Ministry.
What would have happened if McGonagall hadn’t left Dougal? If they had married? Well she would have never met Harry. Yikes! She would have never been a Professor, or worked in the Ministry. And of course she wouldn’t have met Dumbledore, she wouldn’t have been part of the Order of the Phoenix, she wouldn’t have helped defeat Voldemort.
McGonagall is a character we all love! What is Harry Potter without the strict transfigurations Professor? She not only would have left a deep terrible hole in Harry’s life, she would have never helped him. Which means maybe they wouldn’t have won the Battle of Hogwarts. McGonagall was a very strong ally. She was the one who cast the spell to give life to the statues! Without statues almost no army.
I think McGonagall really is a very important character. If she had married Dougal she wouldn’t have existed in the books! Leaving out all of the things she did not only to win the war, but to change us all. I hope you liked today’s Enchanted Details!
