Interview With A Portrait

This was actually initially a school assignment that I had been reticent about completing. I felt incredibly awkward about interviewing a school portrait and was confused about the point of the exercise. I was incredibly surprised at how informative and interesting it was to speak with someone with so much experience, both in life and after. Portraits are incredibly interesting, particularly those at Hogwarts, and I felt that sharing would be the only thing to do. I also intend to collect other people's interviews if they are willing to include in this book. (Note: Still accepting submissions! Owl me!)

Edessa Sakndenberg: An Interview By Claire H. Wood

Chapter 5

Questions:

1) What is your name? Dear, my name is Edessa Sakndenberg.

2) How old are you? You know you can't ask a woman's age... but well... I was born in 1419, I'm 595 years.

3) What is your favorite pastime at Hogwarts? Oh dear, I love talking to students and see how many muggle students Hogwarts is receiving gives me so much pleasure and proud. I was a a fervent defensive of muggle rights in the wizarding world, you know... in my time... I devoted myself to this cause!

4) Tell me a story. I grew up in a Scottish village and I used to play with muggle children instead of "my own kind"...how I hate that expression! This is was what my mother used to tell me... I grew up fondly of a girl called Anne Elliot, she was my only real confidante. Anne was extremely intelligent, calm, and caring, but her most important aspect was her devout religious faith that I learnt to understand. Anne, never seemed to take offense at the way she was treated (female children were much abused and exploit in those days). She had a virtuous character, she died while I was in Hogwarts... she was only 16, she died from a bronchitis and I could have done something to prevent it. I never told her word-by-word about my magical abilities, but I didn't conceal it either, I showed her some few signs of magic and she always said I had a gift from God. I learnt much with her, she was really virtuous and graceful, she would have been a Hufflepuff if she could have come to Hogwarts.

5) How can you describe your career? Oh, dear... let me see if I still can recall all, ahah! Well, when I left Hogwarts I start working in various departments in the Ministry of Magic, I worked for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and the Department of International Magical Cooperation and in the Muggle Liaison Office of the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, but I must tell you that I wasn't fulfilled by it... However, in 1431, I was hired as Muggles Studies professor, a job that I loved, with all my heart! Between 1434-37 I enrolled a History course in The Institute of Historical Wizarding Research and became a social historian. I return to Hogwarts to teach Muggle studies after that, but in 1443 I was made headmistress of the school. I must confess that I was indecised for some time, whether to accept the Headmaster position or not, since teaching was what I loved most, but I thought that this could be a possibility to be able to communicate with the ministry better about muggle rights and regulations.

6) Do you have any connections with Bones family? Why, dear? Are you related to them? Oh... what is your name again? Sweetheart you're Hope's daughter aren't you? Well... Seraphina Bones was my great-great grandaughter and she was your mother's grandmother, she raised all her grandsons and daughters, once Bones' family was almost entirely slaughtered by Death Eaters and Voldemort, during the First War. Me and Seraphina encounters together since she has a portarit here at Hogwarts too. So, yes, sweetie, we are related!

7) To which House were you sorted while in Hogwarts? For my parents' frustration, I was selected into Hufflepuff. I came from a Scottish wizard family that stood with pureblood's ideals, so I was supposed to went to Slytherin, which was a family tradition. But I didn't and I never felt dimished by that, nor any Hufflepuff should feel that, Hufflepuff House values the most righteous principles and none should feel ashame for that! And although I sheer differences from my family, I never abandoned them but I stood with my ideas.

8) Can you tell me more about the Muggle Studies Club, that remains till today? Of course! I still attend some parties, I've got a portrait there! When I was in my 3rd year at Hogwarts and first enrolled Muggle Studies, I formed the “Muggle Studies Club”, because I fell in love with the subject. In that club we had a tutoring programme and we made several field trips to muggle society, and from times to times we had parties, which I still attend.
