Detention, Messes, And The Library
Chapter 1
This was not how Samantha wanted to spend her Saturday morning. She had more important things to do than spend four hours with delinquent students.
If only that girl hadn’t of dumped that shelf on me! she thought as she made her way down the corridor. She stopped in front of the library doors and sighed before making her way inside.
The library wasn’t too full of students. There were a few faces she had recognized from around the grounds. There was the girl who knocked the bookshelves over, at least she got detention too, as well as another Gryffindor, two Hufflepuff ladies and a lanky Slytherin girl. She sat at a table alone though, seeing as she was not here to make friends.
The librarian entered the room, a large chest in her hands. She hefted it onto the table and smiled before turning to look at the students.
"You will be putting the library back together this morning. However you will not be permitted to use magic," she motioned towards the chest on her desk, "Please place your wands in there. You will get them back at the end of detention." Samantha stifled a groan as the other’s in the room interrupted.
"But, no magic?!" stuttered the Gryffindor girl. Samantha smiled as she watched, waiting for the librarian’s response.
"Need I remind you Ms. Fairwater that you are the reason that detention is being served in the library in the first place. No magic!" she smarted before tapping the chest with her wand. Each student approached the chest, gently placing their wand inside before the librarian locked it shut.
Hannah sat in the corner and watched the others, unsure of where to begin with the giant mess of a library. She didn’t understand why she was here in the first place. It’s not like she was eating in the middle of Potions or something. It was just Defense Against the Dark Arts!
The only Ravenclaw in the room began picking up books, looking at the other’s impatiently, waiting for them to help also. She’d be fun if she weren’t so bossy, Hannah thought as she fiddled with her tie.
She watched as the other’s began cleaning up the room, it took her a moment to realize maybe she should help too. Hannah gathered a couple books and left them in a neat stack next to the other’s, who had began arguing.
"I was in the middle of important research! YOU DUMPED THE ENTIRE BOOK CASE ON ME!" the tiny redheaded Ravenclaw shouted. She had cornered the Gryffindor girl and was screaming at her. Hannah wasn’t sure she wanted to get involved, luckily one of the Hufflepuffs stepped in.
"Look we aren’t going to get anything done if you two keep fighting." she said as she placed herself between the two. The Gryffindor girl looked relieved, she seemed a little scared of the other girl and kept apologizing even after the other girl had dropped the conversation. Now seemed like a good time to change the subject.
"If we’re going to be spending all morning together I might as well know your names," Hannah smiled, "I’m Hannah."
"Ceru Fairwater, Gryffindor," responded the apologetic looking girl, "I’m sorry for knocking the shelves over, we wouldn’t be in the library for detention if it weren’t for me. I was helping a first year and my foot slipped. I didn’t mean to knock them over on you.." she looked over at the obviously miffed Ravenclaw. The others began to introduce themselves as well.
"I’m Whisper Princeton, nice to meet you." she smiled, flipping her hair out of her face. She was taller than most of the other girls, though not taller than Hannah.
"My name’s Brittany, Hufflepuff." said the other, she had been busy stocking the shelf with the books Hannah had stacked on the table. She seemed to be avoiding the argument that had been going on all together. Smart idea, she thought as she turned to look at the other’s in the room. The Ravenclaw was too engulfed in a book to be bothered to introduce herself, Hannah cleared her throat to get her attention.
Samantha perked up, unsure of what the other’s wanted from her before she realized she was supposed to introduce herself.
"Oh, right. Samantha Flourish." she responded, one hand on her hip. She was eyeing the Gryffindor boy, who had remained seated the entire time the other’s had put together a bookshelf by themselves. He noticed and smirked before introducing himself.
"Zack Black, can I help you?" he asked Samantha, she stood with her hands arms crossed over her chest, tapping her foot impatiently.
"The least you could do is help a bunch of girls with the heavy lifting." she retorted, pointing at the heavy bookshelf Ceru and Brittany were trying to lift. He laughed before putting his hands behind his head, relaxing.
"It looked like you all had a handle on things." he replied, a smile growing on his face. Brittany and Ceru had already lifted the bookshelf into place and were now busy grabbing books to put away.
"Seriously though, it’ll be done faster if you just help." sighed Ceru. She dusted off her hands and waited for the boy to respond. He seemed oblivious to her remarks.
"Look here Black, I’ve heard about you. You like trouble.." Samantha smiled playfully as she approached him, "I know something that could cause all sorts of trouble."
"Oh?" he looked at her with a devilish grin. Samantha straightened her tie and smiled.
"I’ll tell you, once you’ve started helping." Samantha replied, picking up a book from the floor and offering it to him. He looked at it and seemed to think it over before reluctantly taking the book from her and smiling.
"Alright then, let’s get to work!"
