Let the Games Begin

Chapter 3
Harry grabbed his broom and flew up several feet until he was floating in front of the crowd. Not all students chose to participate during the secret, middle of the night, weekly Friday quidditch games, but almost everyone came (besides the teachers of, course). Harry surveyed the students in the stands and caught sight of Hagrid, who was the only exception to the no teacher rule. Harry announced what the rules were for the first game of the new school year, “Slytherins and Hufflepuffs vs Gryffindor and Ravenclaws. To make it more interesting, you can only fly backwards!” There were chuckles and other murmurs from the throng of students, and then everyone grabbed a broom and flew up. There were about 200 students on each team, and that definitely made for a very crowded quidditch pitch. When you get an entire school of witches and wizards to play a game on a field designed for 14 players, it is inevitable that there will be some amount of chaos. On the other hand, quidditch is played on broomsticks, so there is more room for flying vertically.

The game assumed a state of somewhat-organized chaos. In other words, it was a mess. Half of the students were trying to follow some sort of rules, and the other, well, it may as well have been a free-for-all. But as these games always went, there wasn’t a single person who didn’t enjoy themselves. Even Hermione eventually gave in. At first, she was frantically shouting rules at everyone, trying to maintain some kind of order, until she surrendered and joined Hagrid in the stands.

“Malfoy honestly you are going to slip off that broom in those silk pj’s!” Harry heard Draco curse after almost slipping off his broomstick when dodging a bludger. Draco always complained about everything, but very week he admitted to himself that these Friday nights were the best of his life.

After 4 hours of playing, Ginny caught the first glimpse of the rising sun and the game was called shortly after. The sky seemed to fall as all the small, dark dots in the sky flew down and collapsed, half-asleep.
