Chapter 1: Hazel Jones And Her Favorite Story
Chapter 1
Hazel Jones laid silently on her bed in the girls' Dorms of Gryffindor House. Everything was silent, and the only sound to be heard was her own steady breathing. While her fellow Gryffindors were each in a supposedly deep sleep, Hazel was wide awake, reading one of her favorite stories. On the very first page, she read, silently speaking every word to herself:
It was late once fall in Halloween, the air had quite a chill, And against the moon a skeleton sat alone upon the hill, He was tall and thin with a bat bow tie, Jack Skellington was his name.
These simple verses gave Hazel a chill, making her think about being all alone on a cold, dark, fall night. Especially on Halloween. But she shook this off, remembering that she in fact wasn't alone, and continued to read.
"I'm bored with leering my horrible glances And my feet hurt from doing skeleton dances."
Her eyes lit up as the story came to her favorite part. Where Jack discovers the land of Christmas Town.
A mad excitement swept over his face, As he jumped and darted from place to place. And just when he thought he'd seen all he could see, Behind him lit the most dazzling tree. Immersed in the light, Jack was no longer haunted, For he had found the feeling he wanted.
Hearing footsteps, Hazel quickly shut the book, slid in under her bed, and replaced it with an Ancient Runes textbook. The Gryffindors considered her the intellectual type, only reading the most boring of schoolbooks. But when there was no speech, she immediately immersed herself back into "The Nightmare Before Christmas."
Back in Halloween gathered a group of Jack's peers, As they stared in amazement at his Christmas souvenirs. For his wondrous vision none were prepared, Most were excited (though a few were quite scared).
She heard more footsteps, when she realized they seemed light and without care, unlike any footsteps she had ever heard. Getting out of bed to check out the source of this strange sound, Hazel cautiously walked down the carpeted stairs. She stopped in her tracks and tried hard not to scream, when right there, curiously examining the dazzling Christmas tree, was none other than Jack Skellington.
*Hey, guys! In case you were curious earlier, the words Hazel was reading in "Nightmare" were actually taken from Tim Burton's original poem. I read them off a factual book titled, "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Film, The Art, The Vision."
