Escape In The Night
Chapter 7
Poppy stared at him. "Why would you want to help me?"
Jeorge stared right back, as though he was used to girls staring defiantly into his eyes. "Because I'm stuck here, too."
Poppy's face contorned into an expression of shock. "I thought that you wanted to be here."
He shook his head. "The captain is my uncle. My parents died in a wildfire, so he's the only person I have left. I want to find something valuable, bestow it upon some kind of king, and then become a lord or something and find a beautiful girl and be worry-free, forever. If I can break out of here, I'll be on my way. What are you looking for?"
Poppy reached into her bodice and pulled out her gem. It shimmered gently in the firelight. She rubbed it nervously, the image of the strange girl floating inexplicably in her mind. "I'm searching for my sister Daisy."
Jeorge looked at her with a sort of pity glinting in his eyes. "We can leave now. When we found you, the men confiscated your satchel, but I know where it is."
He left the fireside and returned a few moments later, carrying her leather bag, a roughly sewn patchwork satchel that must have been his own, and two bedrolls. "They didn't open your bag, so I think your gold is still in it. I added a dagger. In case we run into any crazy highwaymen."
Poppy grinned. They untied two horses and extinguished the fire. If anyone was to wake up, it would be easier to escape if there was no light.
