True Seers
Chapter 22
Poppy stared around. The hovel, while tiny from the outside, was beautiful and large inside. The exposed beams on the ceiling were draped with twisted gold garlands and strings of pearls. The dirt floor was carpeted in a soft fabric that she could only call cashmere. The walls were hung with beautiful drawings and small cameos. A bed with a wrought silver stead sat in a corner, satin and down blankets on its surface. A table of shining wood stood in the center of the room. A loom seemed to work with the jewel-tone yarns of its own accord.
Poppy saw a woman standing by the loom. She was the most amazing creature Poppy had ever seen. Her hair was like liquid darkness, cascading over lightly tanned cheekbones and falling gracefully over her shoulders. Her eyes sparkled like the most beautiful gems in the world. A smile played gently across her face, and laughter seemed to cross her eyes. She wore a sweeping gown of loose, floaty turquoise gauze. She sang in a lilting voice, the tones of the music matching the pattern of the loom. When she saw Poppy and Daisy, her faint smile broke into a grin.
"Girls! Oh, it's been an eternity since I've seen your beautiful faces!"
The sisters were confused. Who was this woman, anyway?
Poppy, ever the one to blurt out what she was thinking, asked, "Wait. So who are you again?"
The woman chuckled. "Why, don't you recognize your own mother?"
Poppy stared. "Wait, I have a mother?"
The woman nodded. "You can call me Mom, or Liana. I left because I am the Lady Seer."
Daisy was confused. "Wait, I thought there was only one True Seer born every seven generations."
Liana smiled. "No, that's just what they tell people to make it sound more mystical. All it really takes is the dominant gene. I am a Seer. So was your grandmother, and your great-grandfather."
Poppy lifted her tangle of hair to reveal her Seer's Mark. "So all True Seers have this, right?"
Liana grinned. "Yep. And only True Seers."
Daisy gasped, then slowly raised her braid to reveal a small, blue eye mark.
