Him Again
Chapter 14
The banquet hall was buzzing with loud chatter and music. The king, queen, and princess sat on the dais, and harpists stood at the far end, serenading everyone with beautiful music. Serving maids busted around, carrying platters of elaborate food and drink. Poppy walked along the dais, curtsying and handing out goblets of cider and mead. She walked to the back room to refill her platter, and stopped to survey the room at large. She saw ladies dressed in fine silks and lords in sweeping cloaks. She saw Jeorge talking to a lady. Wait....Jeorge?
Poppy raced across the room, her goblets of sweet water sloshing. She trod upon many a dainty slipper and many a hardened boot in her haste. She needed to see that briggand and get her stone back. She chased after him, weaving through the clumps of ladies and countesses. She found Jeorge, sneaked behind him, and tipped a goblet of sweet water over his head. He sputtered and whirled around.
"Oi! What was that for?"
Poppy assumed the position of shy maid. "Oh, Your Honor, you had something on your head. I wished to remove it." She grinned mischievously. "It's still there." She tipped another goblet onto his head, grinned, and then faced him.
"You took it. Give it back."
Jeorge stared at her, not recognizing her. "What did I take from a serving maid?"
Poppy glared, her beautiful features marred by a growl. "You know perfectly well what I mean, Jeorge. You stole my one thing that was worth anything. I foresee terrible things for you."
That was a bit of a lie. She couldn't tell what she saw for him, but she wanted to make him guilty. Jeorge glared at her for a moment, then flung a fist under her tray. It sent her spinning, and the goblets of sweet water tipped over her face. A murmur spread through the room as Poppy pushed back her hair to reveal the now clear Seer's Mark for all to see.
