Chapter 13
A girl of about sixteen stood in the doorway. Her hair was the color of spun gold, and her eyes were blue. She was clothed in a finer version of Poppy's livery, hers instead being of soft satin. She was confident in her every move, self-righteousness and pride flowed through her veins.
"Who are you and what are you doing in my quarters?"
Poppy gulped. She ran through a list of names she knew.
"My name is Cerise. I'm the new scullery maid."
Poppy had decided that she would assume various personae to keep from being found out as a True Seer. Cerise had been a friend of hers when they traveled into Lioria when she was younger, and it was the first name that came to her.
Canberra seemed unimpressed. "Okay. Here are the rules for living here. Don't touch my stuff, don't talk to me more than you need to, and show respect. Remember, you're just a scullery maid. I'm the princess's lady-in-waiting."
Poppy grasped a dust-cloth and walked downstairs to a knick-knack room. She thought as she dusted the little hobnail glass pots and lumpy wooden sculptures. That Canberra seemed awfully snotty for a servant, so conceited!
She was taking a few-minute break when suddenly Ms. Juliermo burst in, breathing heavily. "Thank the gods you're in here! Our serving maid took ill in the night, and there's a big banquet in a few hours. You're the only one left who can be spared! You'll wear your skirt and blouse you wore when you came here, it looks ever so fetching on you."
Poppy grinned. Even Canberra didn't get to break uniform. Canberra! She'd be so jealous! Poppy practically flew up the stairs into her room to get a fresh outfit (her white blouse and red skirt) and to wash her face in the bowl. If only Canberra were in here!
