Chapter 12
The room that she shared with this girl called Canberra was a sparsely furnished affair with two beds and not much else. A rough-cut vanity with a pitcher and bowl sat on the side of one bed. On that same side was a large chest and a dumbwaiter opening, theoretically for food. The bed on that side had a rough wooden headboard and a threadbare quilt. Poppy sank onto the bed and regarded the other side of the room. There was a pearly vanity covered in products in small glass jars. A chest inlaid with gold leaf sat at the foot of an iron-frame bed covered in satin sheets. Whoever this Canberra was, she was obviously much favored in the palace.
Poppy set to unpacking her satchel. She folded her shawls, blankets, and skirts and blouses into her crude chest and then grasped for her dagger. She ran the dagger along the bottom slat of the chest until its lining came up. Poppy slid her bag of gold under the lining and then flattened it out as much as possible. She walked over to her pitcher and bowl and washed her face and hair as much as possible. She then walked over to the other vanity and opened a jar filled with tan cream. Poppy rubbed some of the cream over her Seer's Mark, but it didn't disappear. A small pencil of deep brown sat next to the jar, and Poppy picked it up. She blended the Mark in with the pencil until it could be passed off as a blemish and forgotten. She lay down on her bed and thought about what she was to do.
