Chapter 8: Dittany
Chapter 8
Name: Origanum Dictamnus
Alias: Dittany, Burning Bush
Named after the mountain it grows on in Crete, Dittany is one of the best plants to have in your greenhouse. To muggles, this plant is a symbol of love, and is used as a flavoring in some Greek dishes. But, to witches and wizards, this plant is far more useful. Just using some of the essence can heal some wounds and prevent scarring, while ingesting it can help some of the more serious injuries. Some wandmakers, though Olivander is not included in this, use the plant as a core for wandmaking. This plant is also a popular potion ingredient, as the leaves are shredded and used for the Wiggenweld Potion. It is also used in some love potions.
On a more historical point, this plant is also mentioned in the story of the Hopping Pot from The Tales of Beedle the Bard. In the story, a sickly child is doused in the brown liquid essence, and comes out rosy and healthy.
Growing Conditions:
pH Levels: 6.6-7.3 (Neutral)
Water Levels: Light sprinklings (Wait till soil is dry before watering)
Sunlight Levels: Moderate
Additional Notes: This plant, if not grown on the mountains of Crete, must be kept in a greenhouse. The soil must stay a constant 13 degrees Celsius.
Danger Level: None, Healing
