Chapter 17: Wormwood
Chapter 17
Name: Artemisia Absinthia
Alias: Wormwood
Is an ingredient in many alcoholic beverages, such as absinthe (which causes hallucinations, thus earning the drink the name 'Green Fairy'). Uses for this plant are for digestive issues, a counter-irritant, to induce sweating, increase hunger, reduce fever, issues with the gall bladder and liver, and to settle the stomach. Ingesting large quantities of the plant can cause convulsions and kidney failure due to thujone, a chemical contained in the plant. Wormwood is used in potions such as the Draught of Living Death.
The name Artemisia is derived from the Greek goddess Artemis, who was the goddess of the hunt and protector of children. This last part is possibly in relation to the fact that her mother, Leto, was chased all around Greece by monsters at the behest of Hera.
