Chapter 14: Mandrake

Chapter 14

Name: Mandrake

Alias: Mandragora

Mandrake is not a plant to be handled lightly. Just a brush of your skin against it can put you in a coma. Hearing it's cry when it is still immature can cause you to pass out. The cry of a fully matured mandrake will kill. Always wear your protective gear when having to handle these. The risk though, equals the gains of using these in potions. Mandrakes are a key ingredient in the antidote to petrification, most notably used to revive the victims of a basilisk during the opening of the Chamber of Secrets in 1992. Also used in sleeping potions and love potions.

In ancient times, the way mandrakes were harvested was by tying the stalk to a dog. The master would then call the dog, the mandrake would be uprooted, and the dog would die. Since mandragora go silent after the death of one victim, it was then safe to collect the plant. Today, we submerge mandrakes into Aquatandisu Potion (created by Amaradus Spencer in 1954), which will also silence the cry.

Growing Conditions:

pH Level: Neutral

Water Level: 3/4 the approximate weight of the plant

Additional Notes: Grow best in areas where men have been hung. Resembling a tobacco plant, mandrakes will grow from 5 cm-40 cm. Must be re-potted once they outgrow their original pot.

First Aid: If physical contact occurs or the cry of a young mandrake is heard, the victim must have the spot of contact washed thoroughly and be transported to a medical facility to get a Tandisu Injection. There is no cure for death.

Danger Level: Critical
