Chapter 3

Gillyweed

Climate:

  • Needs a lot of water, but very little sunlight
  • Moderately alkaline soil  (7.9-8.4 pH)
  • in the Mediterranean Sea

Appearance:

  • Grey-Green, Slimy Bushel

Properties:

  • Of the Giliac weed family
  • fresh, nourishing feeling when eaten

Uses:

  • Consumption makes the eater grow gills and have webbed fingers and toes
  • Used in Gillywater - a popular drink with Gillyweed, cucumber, and sometimes the addition of the spicy Gillyflower

Controversy:

  • There is some debate on how long the effects of Gillyweed last in salt water, though most experts agree it lasts for about an hour in fresh water.
  • Some experts say effects can last up to three hours in salt water while others claim there is no difference in Gillyweed's reaction to salt and fresh water.
