Aconite

Chapter 12

Aconite (Aconitum)

AKA: Monkswood, Wolfsbane, Leopard's bane, women's bane, blue rocket, the devil's helmet, or "the queen of poisons"

Climate:

  • forests and mountain ranges of moderate temperature
  • likes dark, fluffy, nutritious soil
  • shady areas

Appearance:

  • A pretty, unassuming flowering plant

Properties:

  • it's poisonous (if you haven't figured it out already)
  • poisonous sedative, deadly in even small doses
  • death can occur within  2-6 hrs of exposure
  • stage one of dying includes nausea, diarrhea and vomiting
  • stage two includes burning, tingling and numbness in abdomen, mouth and face
  • stage three includes sweating, dizziness, confusion, headaches, and trouble breathing
  • stage four never happens because you are already dead

Uses:

  • to kill
  • to slow the heart rate
  • to kill

Safety:

  • always wear dragon-hide gloves when handling
  • never handle with open wounds
  • if it does get into wounds, apply the antidote (antropine), and go to St. Mungo's IMMEDIATELY, (but you'll probably still die anyway)
