The Rat of a man

Chapter 1
The Rat other wise known as Peter Pettigrew. I was thinking about this the other day and it dawned on me how much time I have actually spent in the company of this stupid, horrible rat. Scabbers as he was known was actually an animagus under cover and came to Hogwarts as Percy’s pet rat.

Percy started in 1987, which was around three years before I started Hogwarts, as a proper student. At the time I was living in the dungeons of the castles of Hogwarts with my Uncle Severus Snape. The rat was not a permanent feature but would wonder around in the same way that I did.

In 1991 Percy handed down his rat to his brother Ron who took it, rather reluctantly, as his own pet to the Gryffindor Common Room. By this time, I too was in Gryffindor. I not only spent time with Ron and his friends but I went to his house over the summer for a week or two. Therefore, up until 1994 Scabbers was a big part of my life. If not an unpleasant one.

There is a gap. An unpleasant period in which Scabbers, Pettigrew or whatever you want to call him was “in-between” places. Maybe I was in-between as well. The idea of being away from him, away from all parents well. I came back into contact with him when he worked yet again for my father, as more of a slave than anything else.
When I had come to terms with, well everything. I realised that Pettigrew had been in my life for a long time. Not as a rat but as a man. When I lived in Malfoy Manor he was there, when I was in Cokeworth, he was there. I hated him I had to get away from the rat that was possessing my life. It wasn’t until 1998 when I was finally relieved of the pest.

All-in-all I reckon I spent seven years with rat Scabbers and two or three years with human Pettigrew. I disliked not only the rat but the human version. I wish Nagini had eaten him.
