Chapter 1
Phoebe opens her eyes and looks around. It's dark, she's alone, and she feels like any second she'll burst. A second later she realizes that she's underwater, and she's drowning. It's almost as if she were dying in slow motion. Her life didn't flash before her eyes, in fact, she didn't even know how she'd gotten here. Phoebe vaguely remembers a happy time, with her parents, but she forgot how that felt. It was as if she had forgotten who she was. She suddenly realized that perhaps she should try to get to the surface. She swam and swam, and she must not have been too deep or else she surely would've died. But she made it, she took a few deep breaths. And for a glorious moment, Phoebe didn't feel alone, she could see a beach not too far away and it was packed. She didn't feel like she was lost in the dark, the sun was blazing overhead. And she didn't feel like she was about to explode. For that time, she remembered who she was, she remembered the happiness she had felt with her parents. But then, something tugged Phoebe back under the sea. Deeper than before, but she hardly struggled. By now she had decided that it was pointless, something would always drag her back down. She was feeling alone again, and it was darker than ever, and she was sure that at any moment she'd pop. Phoebe couldn't breathe, but somehow she was still alive. It was some horrible form of torture, hurting her lungs, her brain, her heart, her whole body. She finally reached such a depth that she was numb, empty. Phoebe longed to feel again, but she was worried about what she would feel. She finally gave in entirely. Phoebe stopped caring and her heart turned cold. She drifted lower and lower, with every inch she became meaner, because what was the point of being kind down here? At least she can feel less pain as she forever sinks below the surface, drowning, but never dying.
